^ Once all the parking lots have been consumed by development, the parking garages will be the next to go. Easier to buy out a parking garage operator than move out residents or office tenants in existing buildings.

No need to do so when there are tons surface parking lots left to look at. That's a really dense site you are looking at and asking to demolish. Are you serious? Do you understand the cost?

It is utilized enough that they are using the top level of parking on the roof.

In the Summer and Winter no one wants to park on the roof due to rain, snow or heavy sun.

It looks 90% full. There are more and better opportunities to build on instead of likely 12 above ground layers of a seemingly productive parking tower.

I know its in vogue to hate upon parking decks, and cars in general, massed in new high rises but this deck is not a blight on the community IMO.

If it was replaced it would be replaced by a tower with a similar parking deck on a similar footprint with the addition of the ugly parking podium as a replacement.

Leave parking towers greater than 6 levels alone.

We have enough flat asphalt parking squares before we start trying to demolish this very thick re enforced with thick rebar in a very heavy parking structure.

Look how dense that area is. Would you prefer the above said option instead, with the costly replacement. Are you asking for a 100 story tower with no parking but parking for a thousands of bicycles instead.

Lets get real folks.

Most productive human beings own at least 1.75 cars per small family. A Family of 4 or more will need at least 2 cars even in the city esp if their children are of driving age.

Some of you have your sights set on the wrong blocks IMO.

Tons of new construction in this shot. Click the image to go to Flickr, then click the down arrow at the lower right of the image to view much larger versions.

Great shots by all the photographers!! Close ups and overview shots help you really understand what they are doing.

What? This is absurd on its face and it sounds like a recipe for a terrible quality of life. I know tons of families in the city and they pretty much all have one car. In many cases, that car is used for shopping and driving to other cities, but not for the daily use. There are certainly auto-oriented neighborhoods where a car is required, but those aren't the ones that contain parking garages that might be torn down.

If you design cities where you NEED a car--for example by prohibiting high density development, mandating parking minimums and funding highway expansion instead of dedicating public space to transit--people will need cars because you've given them no choice.

My neighbors walk their kids to school and bike to the Loop from Ukranian village. It's a great lifestyle that you can easily have in most other developed countries but not too many other places in the States. We should be doing all we can, as fast as we can, to encourage development that results in a high quality of life for the people who live here, not for the people who are driving through our city.

I was with you until you said this. Large scale parking garages can help ease congestion in a dense neighborhood significantly. But 2 cars per family is not a necessity, especially if you live in the city.

My favorite part of this is that this is a floor taller than what was initially presented to neighbors. Has alderman backing too

The west Adams project's correct address that was approved by the plan commission is really 845 W Adams, right next to Mary Bartelme Park.
