I would be worried this is a race to the bottom.
For some they don't. 29" pitch with full recline. No other airline on the planet subjects people to that sort of misery. After 25 years I've torn up my Aeroplan Card and am starting from scratch with United Plus.

We need true (i.e. foreign) competition to see just how miserable flying has become (and is becoming) with the "mainline" carriers in Canada.

The ULCCs around the world are typically 30" pitch.. and none that I know of allow recline in that configuration.

Rouge planes have a smaller recline than mainline. I found just as much room on Rouge with 30" of pitch as on United with 32". The seats make all the difference.

They serve their purpose. People continue to buy them. That makes them okay.

Not a big poster in this thread but I having read it for some time I have begun to take the advice of those suggesting to complain about unacceptable wait times at security at YYC. After 9 weeks I received my first response back from CATSA's complaint line ! This was regarding a 30 minute delay in the NEXUS line at the A concourse where I almost missed my flight. Thought a couple of you might get a chuckle:

"We apologize for your wait. We work within our operating budget and do everything we can to reduce the lineups while continuing to maintain the highest levels of security.

CATSA plays an integral role in the Government of Canada’s aviation security system and takes pride in serving the travelling public. While security is CATSA’s top priority, we also strive to maintain a high level of customer service and professionalism.

Sincerely, "

Question De Beers what happened!

Why are De Beers no longer running their charter flights from the terminal?Flights now depart from the former Field Aviation hangar. They use the lounge that was previously used by Suncor. Summit are still operating the flights and it looks like they are running a daily schedule. CAA made a big whoop de do at the AGM earlier this year so curious why they lost the business to the south side. Meanwhile I am told that Suncor are not happy operating from the terminal due to numerous logistical problems. If true it will be interesting to see how long it takes before they return to the south side of the airfield.

As with wireless service, Canada is amongst the worst countries for air service due to protection of domestic incumbents. I can fly from Perth to Singapore return for $300. Return to Brisbane is similar. Who cares about so called "service" amenities when the price is cheap, booking process simple and scheduling reliable. Only jerks recline seats.

It's been a few years since I've flown Air Canada but I still remember it as being the bottom of the barrel, mostly due to surely employees. West Jet will likely deteriorate if the union contagion spreads.

You can fly from Canada to a foreign destination on a foreign airline.

Many countries protect their domestic airlines on domestic travel. Europe might be the exception, as it is considered one market unto itself.

I believe there is a disconnect between people's expectations and what they're willing to pay. In the regulated and 'glamorous' era of flight, prices were set by government and service was great, because airlines were guaranteed profits. In 1974, airfare between New York and Los Angeles was $1442 (inflation adjusted). Today, no where near that.

I personally use a sliding scale. I don't need all the frills and features on a 3 hour flight. I've flown some discount airlines (Rouge, WOW Air) - they did the job and that was fine.

Now, for a transatlantic or transpacific flight, I'll splurge on a better seat and more amenities because I don't want to be a miserable mess the next day.

I'm reminded of a funny Onion article:

The Onion - Frontier Airlines

Yeah, the three hour rule is a widely acknowledged standard I think. I have had employers that would accept business class bookings for reimbursement only if the flight exceeded three hours, otherwise it was economy only.

Westjet to launch year-round YYC-MEX

http://westjet2.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=1275

4 weekly from 15 March then daily from 28 April.

So WS will join AM on the YYC-MEX route.

Flight times are better for destination MEX passengers. Talking to my buddy at TransCanada, the AM redeye flight is useless for them as the next day is a write off. WJ flight allows you to get in and get a good nights rest before the next business day.

Interesting to see how this impacts AM. Hopefully by the spring their loads will have stabilized to a level that can support WJ's entrance.

huh... did the airport's team know that WS would be coming in with a MEX route this quickly after Aeromexico launches? Can the city support 2 carriers on this route?

I would think that they work pretty closely with WS to know, and maybe shouldn't have bothered with Aeromexico in the first place.

YVR will have four airlines to MEX. They might have a problem.
WS goes to daily effective end of April.

YVR will have 5 carriers to MEX - AC, AM, 4O, CZ and now WS

Is China Southern allowed to carry passengers solely between YVR-MEX though?

You are correct... CZ cannot carry YVR-MEX Pax.

So yeah technically 4 carriers!

Speaking of AM, it looks like they've extended the Tuesday flight cancellations until the end of October.

Scary landing for this A380. Check the swerves after touchdown - I'm amazed it didn't tip!

It's going to be nice watching those dreamliners coming and going from the new hangar.

Nice plane. Let's keep quiet about Boeing delivering an aircraft tariff free in Canada...
