The new council and mayor have brought a new direction. They essentially approve it all now. I seem to remember the most hesitant the council was in approving a project recently was one of the towers at Central Green. The reason was that the proposal was not tall enough (at I believe 5 stories).

Wow thats excellent news. Seems Kelowna has changed a lot for the better since I moved away about 5 years ago.

Nice pics Giallo.

Your shots really demonstrate how inept Kelowna city councils have been for a long time in just allowing any building to go up anywhere because apparently they've never heard of the simple concept of a "downtown". Kelowna's skyline would be more impressive than Victoria's if they had understood it.

It is odd but it is what it is. I think they're now trying to build up Landmark as a downtown for the locals who want a less busy alternative to the tourist spots and making it more pedestrian friendly while the actual downtown is for the visitors and locals alike. Metro Vancouver has multiple commercial centres as well and I don't think it's a bad thing to not put all the eggs in one basket. The two centres also attracts different kinds of businesses. Law firms and financial institutions seem to set up shop downtown while Landmark tends to attract technology and design firms. Not to say it's a black and white rule.

It's not just the Landmark business center though, it's also the residential high-rises that are all over the valley. Downtown is home to half of the 10 tallest buildings in Kelowna which means that half of them are elsewhere. Name another city in North America that is like that, Vancouver isn't like this at all, the vast majority of it's tall buildings are downtown just like here in Victoria. I kind of figured this is one of the reasons city councils existed-to avoid things like this.

Looks like it.

There's some work happening on the other side of BNA where Flashbacks used to be but it's probably just a renovation for a new tenant. I was volunteering at the Central Okanagan Food Bank the other day too and once they're in at their new location on Enterprise Way, they'll be selling their current property for a healthy profit I can imagine. Their current location was so cramped so it'll be good for them to get some breathing room.

Exciting times for what is slowly become the entertainment district of Kelowna. I hope the residents of these towers won't oppose noise although there's little they can really do.
