Yeah - I drove by yesterday. Travellers isn't an Impark lot. There might be new signage on the property to make clear that it's not an extension of the pre-existing lot Stormer mentions.

Most telling is that none of the signs on/near the Travellers site face Broad... this would be an epic marketing fail by Impark, if that were a parking lot.

Should Regina make a bid for Amazons second head quarters all those 33 acres of land downtown would be perfect ,then they can use the completely dead capital Pointe as a viewing tower

Much like the Olympics, hosting an Amazon HQ is a recipe for economic disaster for an area. You don't want giant tech companies starting a growth area near you unless you want housing costs to double.

EDIT - Also, Amazon has said they are only going to consider areas with a population of 1 million+. And they are publicly announcing this so that municipalities start a bidding war for tax incentives. In the end they will move somewhere, pay significantly reduced taxes, and raise living costs for the area.

Just like our Call Centre boom & the GTH... location for these companies is a commodity. They'll locate wherever makes the most sense economically, and relocate when somewhere else offers up a better overall deal.

This basically leaves taxpayers on the hook for incentives (tax & otherwise)... which - if the government(s) involved were good at cost/benefit analysis - might be OK. But I'm not confident that governments (elected officials, specifically) are great at long term cost/benefit analysis on this sort of investment.

True, but the size and scope of a campus of this nature [or Google, Apple, etc] is too large for them to simply relocate if a different city offers a better "deal."

The economic impact a campus like this leaving would have on virtually any economy provides a brilliant hammer to constantly hold over tax authorities' heads. Not many politicians are willing to risk the (perceived) economic loss of a campus such as this pulling up stakes (even if it's a long-shot)... so odds are they'll keep incentives in place indefinitely, even if a reasonable cost/benefit analysis 10-15 years hence illustrates that the benefit isn't worth the public expense.

Granted, a campus like this is far better rooted than a call centre (could leave overnight with minimal cost to the company); or a warehouse (it would certainly cost Loblaws some cash to move... but you can bet they're always keeping their eyes open to other regions' offers).

Getting the Amazon campus would be the greatest thing to have ever happened to Regina. 40,000 high quality jobs is something we could only dream of.

There's a zero percent chance we get it though.

Sorry - should've been clearer... I know there's zero chance we'll get it.

Even Calgary & Edmonton are maaaaaasive longshots.

Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver are the only real contenders. Ottawa might get a glance because of its large pool of IT professionals, high tech firms, and proximity to Waterloo.

(my comments were focused more on governments tossing tax breaks/incentives/etc aimed at luring firms. Zero sum most of the time, if not a net loss when various governments are tossing money to lure companies away from each other.)

Do we know what the final result will be of the curtain wall replacement? Are they replacing the entire outside?

No pictures, but the GM is going through a slow demolition process. Just a big steel frame mostly where Extra Foods used to be. Across the street the old Esso is just a brownfield. The South Albert Co-op gas station is done, A&W is done, Car Wash is nearing completion.
