Why is spandrel so bad? Glass's r value isn't crazily different than a lot of exterior finishing materials, and if you're backing it with whatever you want, why wouldn't it insulate as well as any wall. Is it the porous nature of glazing?

Cue the Winnipeg Debbie downers, there's a joint bid being put together between the province and city for the new Amazon headquarters.

I'm happy that they're actually trying! I know the odds are very very low but its worth a try.

I don't know why they're trying - it specifies 1M people. We don't have that.

And no one would call me a Debbie downer.

It may specify it but that doesn't mean they'll stick to it.

It's such an opportunity the city/province would be crazy to not at least give it a shot, even if it is almost guaranteed somewhere else will get chosen

"The most basic requirement for a market is population. IKEA's market research calls for a minimum of two million people within about 40-60 miles of a single media market."

Crazy things have happened before...

Debbie Downer? Who's she? So they gave Chipman about 5% for his project. I'd give Amazon about $500 million to get this project in Winnipeg. It's that big.

I'm sorry, but it's just not happening. It's unrealistic to think it's happening.

I'd love it but working in the industry there's not a large enough labour pool locally. Of course, this would be a huge draw to fix that.

It's probably more of a publicity stunt than a serious bid. Canada's tech sector is getting a bit of U.S. media exposure over this, and they want Winnipeg to get some media mentions in that context rather than being completely invisible as usual.

Winnipeg will not be selected as much as I'd like it to be. If we were even Ottawa's size I think our chances would be immediately greater. There are many qualities about the city that could make it appealing, but we lack the size and labour pool.

Odds of any Canadian city getting this are slim. Trump would shame Amazon relentlessly if Canada 'stole' 50,000 jobs from the US.
