Correct, which makes it all the more ridiculous.

Halifax has lots going for it right now their downtown even seems to have it sort of figured out. Winnipeg needs to find out how to make our waterfront a focal point. (Hint: It starts with regulating the waterlevel and upgrading the riverwalk to something a bit more permanent than a mud path)

Thinking about it, there's no reason our downtown shouldn't be way ahead of where it is except that we have spineless govt and bad planners.

Totally agree. Halifax is developing a great tech sector, and that is what retains and attracts younger, educated folks who will live downtown.

Winnipeg must stop catering to suburbanites, and put as much effort into downtown as possible.

Halifax seems basically on par with what's going on here. They only have 2 projects in the 20+ stories range right now. We've got D Condo, True north square towers, 300 Main coming down the pipeline, and just finished 300 Assiniboine. If Sutton Place and the Forks developments get underway it will be no contest.

But that isn't comparable either, because Winnipeg would be kicking ass if East St Paul had 500,000 people helping it out.

BIIIIIIIG IF

But absolutely correct, and in fact, it would be dishonest of any government to include downtown for development growth fees.

Objectively - not really. More of their construction is happening in the core, but their population and economic growth rates are basically identical to Winnipeg

Population growth is wonderful, but not as much as building up the downtown, which they are doing better than Winnipeg.

But then you could say the same about Edmonton too if you're comparing city populations solely....it is close to Ottawa only, and thus "close" to Winnipeg by that logic.

However that isn't an accurate representation of reality. Gatineau and the metro communities around Edmonton are basically just extensions of both the cities. They are both ~1.6x to 1.7x the size of Winnipeg (or closer to 2x the size than of similar size) and the implications are what that contributes towards the local economy...even having an extra 100k people over Winnipeg leads to that much more of a tax base for example or the number of people who may be developers interested in contributing more projects downtown.

Winnipeg is doing pretty good I'd say. High-rise scale is similar in scope (and taller) to Ottawa. Would more general development downtown be nice? Yes, I am in agreement with you that I'd like to see more...I've been spoiled by the pace of construction in Calgary from living there for a while, but it is important to keep context in it's place and Winnipeg is doing pretty well...plus it is all about momentum. Keep this current pace going and it will only get better and better (more construction) as the city continues to grow. The stable growth that exists in Winnipeg is a forté

Winnipeg has more tall high rise construction right now ongoing than any other non-million plus city in the country (that isn't missisauga), afaik, and is doing pretty well in general construction

The road infrastructure here is the biggest sore spot in my eyes

I will agree with you in sentiment though....even if Ottawa and Edmonton are more 2x the size of Winnipeg, that shouldn't mean we shouldn't expect or demand more construction...at one point Winnipeg was larger than both those cities so why can we not look to those cities as bars that Winnipeg should strive towards - that sentiment is completely fair.

Hamilton has more, Halifax has more and (I am pretty sure) London has more.

On the other hand, we have 4 towers just completed and 4 underway, with 3 more in the pipeline. That not counting smaller projects.

The perfect can't be the enemy of the good.

Winnipeg is doing well. A few years ago we were discussing if we had enough as a city to get an IKEA for goodness sake.

Thankfully you are not mayor of the city or president of Centreventure. Even they are of the opinion that the city is doing good, but there is a lot of work to be done.

I'm of the same opinion - that's the point. The work is finally being done. I'm not going to bitch about things when they're getting better.

really sorry to post this here as I'm not really sure where it fits. It's more a Winnipeg building related question.

I was driving down Hendersen a few years ago - apparently for my first time or apparently the first time I was able to look around and notice this - but was surprised to see this skybridge between two apartments at 'Oakland Gardens' (210 Oakland avenue)

(Image on Google Streetview is clipped a bit so the bridge may look 'cut' a bit in the middle)

Inconsistent (matches the penthouse but not the rest of the building) and kind of awkward looking placement / location. High enough up that I'm not quite sure of the purpose of it.

Does anyone know anything about this thing? Am I the only one who finds it bizarre? Where should I post questions like this in the future - starting a new thread seems like overkill lol.

Holiday towers on Hargrave also has the same thing.

My assumption has always been there are some amenities on the upper floor so they have the skywalk so people on the upper floors in one tower don't have to take the elevator all the way down walk across then take the elevator all the way back up.
