Anything to improve the worst section of Jasper Ave, from 112-118 or so is a win in my books, though I'd prefer four 20 story buildings (or eight 10 stories) over 48 and 37 story towers.

Is anything happening with that vacant lot on the corner of Jasper and 116th (kitty corner from the gas station)? And any chance that Edmonton Motors is going to move and make way for some urban development?

I would have to assume that the more the rest of the neighbourhood develops the pressure to redevelop at least part of the Edmonton motors blocks will increase.

It would be nice if we could have an old school dealer built there, have condos above a podium like:

Expect those car lots eventually to get a Southpark.

Many ugly gaps to fill on West Jasper. It already has some nice elements, but there is soooo much potential there.

Also on dealerships, waiting for the day we get a large tenant like a grocery store or dealership under a condo complex. Nothing says big city more than this.

Edmonton's Jasper Avenue streetscaping a disaster!

Let’s face it, the city’s experiment this summer to “Imagine Jasper” Avenue has been an unmitigated flop.

The landscaping is ugly. Many of the trees have died.

The picnic tables cluttering up the parking lanes between 109 Street and 115 Street look like outdoor seating at a homeless shelter, although even the homeless have the good sense not to use them.

I was never a fan of this. To me it was unattractive and a waste of cash.....

Not the best execution, but the real point of it is to look at elements of this pilot to see what works well, what does not, what should be included, what we can pass on.

Materials used were unappealing I will agree. But what do you expect for something temporary on small budget?

Conceptually, I got the idea and I think it is fantastic. It will be a game changer once the permanent stuff comes in; I expect high quality and beautiful design.

A permanent design would not be even close to what we witnessed with the temporary scheme. I abhor wide streets.

Great name choice. I really hope we start to take advantage of more of these kind of spaces.

It’s a Sign! Spur Line Alley
August 25, 2017

The sign to mark the honorary naming of ‘Spur Line Alley’ was installed on Whyte Avenue today. The name was suggested by Edmontonians Tianna Albrecht and Mario Panizzo, whose entry was chosen in the Name the Alley! Competition, which was organized by CITYlab, the Old Strathcona Business Association, and the City of Edmonton’s Naming Committee.

“‘Spur Line’ gives a nod to the railway history in the area and is a bit of a play on words,” said Marco Melfi, Planner with the City of Edmonton. “In railway terms, spurs are a branch off of a railway route and similarly, the alley is a like a spur off Whyte Avenue.”

The Name That Alley! competition invited Edmontonians to give an honorary name to the alley turned pedestrian space on Whyte Avenue between 104 and 105 streets. The Naming Committee reviewed all 67 submissions and revealed the approved name at an event in the Alley in June.

The competition and the alley painting party to launch the competition, invited Edmontonians to participate in the Alley’s transformation to a pedestrian plaza. The honorary name continues that transformation and allows us to identify this plaza is a shared space to bring people together.

Agreed, I didn't see any active alleys when I explored Seattle and Spokane.
