So correct me please. So when these forms are done going diagonal they are going to start going vertical and the forms that are going straight veritcal now are going to connect to the diagonal one to start making the floor plates?

This suggests that the portion with shear walls are going to be significantly more rigid and I would guess those shear walls are the reason they don't need any blow-thru floors below that point. One can assume that of those top floors the ones closest to the sheer walls are the most stable. Floors closer to the base have less leverage on the structure than those at the top and since they have the smallest floor plates of the frustrum making them blow-thru does even less to negate the effects of the wind because there's less surface area for the wind to push against.

this was a great explanation. thank you.

Wind tunnel scale models are very effective tools that help architects and structural engineers determine where lateral and seismic loads will be most detrimental to the structure on the actual highrise. That is what determined where the pass-through floor would be located. It is not arbitrary.

When I was working on the original Aqua hotel back in 2008, the drawings showed shear walls that were 5'-6" thick (or something like that). Being 9 years younger and a lot more naive in my career, I thought it was a typo....until my first site observation (alongside the same contractor and developer) and sure as shit, those shear walls were legit that thick because they ran up almost the entire height of that building.

This project is obviously a 'little' different, but methodology and standards of care are the same, considering the architect, developer and contractor are the same (with the addition of Wanda for Vista).

Does the construction industry still use Imperial units? God that sounds confusing.

^Ha Ha no. I think Harry was kidding. Here in the HVAC industry we only get as precise as about an 1/8" inch. We also have a saying; "Good enough for government work".

Is it just me or did they move up their completion date? There is a huge sign on the southward face of the building that says "Opening 2019". For images of this and more go to https://buildingupchicago.com

So is the Shoreham and the Tides elevated walkways north of the buildings going to connect with Vista's so you can walk all the way through? Or are they going to stay seperate?

Good God this is going to be the busiest lower lower wacker has been ever. Still can wait for the third crane. I wonder if they could borrow each others? I know it's the same company so couldn't they? Technically?

Power Construction is the GC on GEMS, McHugh is the GC on Vista. The two companies have a good relationship, Power some times hires McHugh to perform concrete work. They would not share one of Vista's crane as each project will need its own dedicated crane. Glad to see this getting started!
