City charters still to come

Other regulations released in draft form Monday include changes to the amount of infrastructure developers can be required to pay for in new areas and how that is calculated, how disagreements between municipalities in Alberta will be resolved, and how complaints about property tax assessments are handled.

In a newsletter update to interested parties, Municipal Affairs Minister Shaye Anderson said two final regulations are expected to be released “in the coming months.”

That release is expected to include the city charters, which will outline a new relationship for the province and its two major cities.

When the science centre was originally proposed, I believe that one of the potential locations discussed was in the river valley somewhere near Rosedale and the baseball field. Why the city ultimately chose a location far off near a light industrial business park eludes me.

It was built next to the original Planetarium, built in 1960.

New provincial regulations released Monday would allow Edmonton to impose higher taxes on speculators and other commercial property owners who leave land sitting vacant.

That’s a win for Edmonton officials, who have been lobbying for the change. It’s a move that would create what one city lawyer previously called “one of the most powerful tax tools that exist” in the fight to clean up derelict properties.

The new set of regulations also includes a provision that would let cities charge small businesses 75 per cent less than the regular non-residential rate on their taxes.

The new batch of regulations — out for public comment until Sept. 22 — gives the fine detail before the 2016 amendments to the Municipal Government Act can finally take effect. That document is like a constitution for Alberta cities, governing what they can and can’t do.

As I agree with building it next to the QEP, the talk at the time was to building it in the slope below Government house and the Museum. Similar to the design of Ontario Science Centre.

A very special and beautiful designed tower will be going on the Baccarat site and will blow away anything Edmonton has seen for a tower design.

Genuinely curious as to what info you have to back up that claim?

Let's all be very clear here. That site has been mentioned as a potential site for a 'signature' tower and we have seen a massing/early concept for that site which looks taller and unique, but as far as I know, that's about it for now.

I was all ears at special and beautiful. And blow away anything Edmonton has seen.

The massing/picture we have seen so far for this site wasn't that great at all imo. To me it was very generic.
