Those whitish panels are super meh and there are big chunks of solid meh whitish panels along the back and towards the South.
Lots of us are pretty disappointed with the library here, they have obviously cut some costs on the glass, so it's up to the wood accents and finishing to decide whether it's a gem or just a nice building.

The renders of the renovated library up there look pretty good, nothing ground breaking but no false hopes like we had after the design for our library was first released. The materials will make or break this one...

The photo on the left is very close, the other has a bit of bump to the colour. It is orange/brown though.

A LOT more orange than brown as you will see standing there in person.

Yep, be a great addition to the ave.

That, and selfishly, be nice to be able to have my window open and not have the TV drowned out by gravel trucks gearing up to haul away soil ...

Short-term, I know

I have an urban planner friend from Singapore who is visiting Edmonton, I toured him around. He has an idea, why not move the telus world of science to the location of shaw conference centre. Build a new conference centre/mixed use beside rogers place(old casino). In that case, the flow of entertainment/cultural is encircling the CBD. Is the conference centre downtown city-owned or a private one?

Shaw is City owned. Telus World is never moving - MEGA public donor money SUNK into it. Anyway there is a possibility for incremental expansion at the Shaw with the Alldritt Tower including a new 4* hotel in the 80 story tower. And we're stuck with EXPO and it's not going anywhere and the City has debt to pay on it - lots of debt with zero potential to sell it and build elsewhere. If your friend comes back and sees Alldritt and a Shaw expansion in the concourse and the redeveloped Northlands site as proposed ... he might think we have brilliant facilities and in the perfect places 😀

Urban Design Awards - Competition now open!
July 25, 2017

Submissions are now being accepted for Edmonton’s 2017 Urban Design Awards, which celebrate projects that transform the City’s urban environment and help shape Edmonton’s quality of life.

The Awards are given in seven categories that include everything from large architectural projects to small innovative community projects.

Do you know an individual, organization, firm or project that has contributed to urban design in Edmonton? Nominations and submissions can be made online from now until August 15, 2017. The jury panel, selected from urban designers, architects, landscape professionals and artists from across Canada, will convene in September to evaluate submissions. The selected winners will be revealed at a gala in November.

New this year is an online people’s choice selection. Check back in September to vote for your favorite. And don’t miss your chance to submit or nominate your favorite urban design project! The Urban Design Awards are presented by the City of Edmonton and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

'Powerful tax tool': New regulations would let cities tax derelict land into shaping up

Elise StolteELISE STOLTE

New provincial regulations released Monday would allow Edmonton to impose higher taxes on speculators and other commercial property owners who leave land sitting vacant.

That’s a win for Edmonton officials, who have been lobbying for the change. It’s a move that would create what one city lawyer previously called “one of the most powerful tax tools that exist” in the fight to clean up derelict properties.

The new set of regulations also includes a provision that would let cities charge small businesses 75 per cent less than the regular non-residential rate on their taxes.

The new batch of regulations — out for public comment until Sept. 22 — gives the fine detail before the 2016 amendments to the Municipal Government Act can finally take effect. That document is like a constitution for Alberta cities, governing what they can and can’t do.
