I once lived across the street from a fire hall and that was pretty brutal. I could not imagine living on top of one.

Is this a common thing around the world or is this a Vancouver phenomenon?

hahahahahahahahaha of course not that would be sexist and not PC.

But you are absolutely right there should be equal housing built for low income male lead households and female lead.

Yeah I worked at Main and Alexander for a while and you'd think there'd be more pressing issues but being near the fire hall was the worst part about it. No one should be subjected to that.

It better be low-income housing or forget it!

Don't get me wrong, I love density and I love dense living. I LOOOOVVE living downtown and I really don't mind the noise and busyness of it all. However living ontop of a fire station would be absolutely dreadful. Even working in an office ontop of a fire station would be a nightmare. But then again, how does big cities like New York do it? Food for thought...

This won't be the first example - there was one built in East London at least 20 years ago. Potomac Yard in Alexandia, Virginia has market and affordable apartments over a firehall. There's a fabulous newly designed building in Washington DC with a new replacement fire hall with a squash court on the second floor (called Squash On Fire) and four floors of affordable rental above that. San Francisco are thinking of putting affordable housing over their new firehall, and this probably won't be the last in Vancouver, as several more firehalls are due to be redeveloped.

There's a library over the firehall in Fairview, and it never seems to be particularly noisy. There's a protocol for all firehalls in residential areas that they don't usually sound their siren until they reach the arterial road, so it shouldn't be any more noisy than any other location near a firehall. Living across the street could easily be noisier!

I haven't seen any mention of this proposal for the Safeway site at Commercial & Broadway. I think it looks rather well done.

Information from the open house was posted 10 days ago and was being discussed as recently as the last page. It is a nice project though

6679 Main Street Open House

http://rezoning.vancouver.ca/applications/6679main/index.htm

Firstly, I'll admit that the last photo may not be of the building, but it was food provided at the open house. If it encourages some on here to take the plunge and attend some of the open house events, I hope I will be given some leeway.

So, the proposal is for a 6 story rental 100 project. Given it's proximity to Sunset CC, Langara, and major transit, it really should be under some sort of expedited process.
There are a few things to point out about this project. First is a townhome on the southwest corner that will have two entrances, with one entrance into the lobby and another entrance to a private patio connecting to 51st Ave rather than the alley. The rooftop is being planned with a large empty area for events and a community garden, and part of the roof may be converted into an amenity room if City Planners are demanding such a space. Also of note is that the stairwell was configured to allow for a couple extra units to be squeezed in.
The developers originally wanted to see one parking stall provided per unit, but are starting to see the light of day given the location, and are open to reducing the amount of parking, which has an obvious cost benefit to them as well.

Though there appeared to be an attempt to spread the anti-development/change crowd from Chinatown to the Punjabi Market area, I was pleasantly surprised to see that effort bore no fruit at the open house. Turn out for the open house actually seemed very low to me. While I didn't get an exact number, I would place it under a dozen. Given the event was hosted by a neighbourhood restaurant, I found the low attendance even more shocking.

Santa Fe Apartments Update July 15th

My photos

The Santa Fe is nearing completion. Seemingly they are just doing finishing touches as it is now accepting rental applications. I have to say, the wall layout in the old heritage portion looks terrible, at least from looking in through the window.

Equal housing when 80% of single parents are women and they earn on average $20,000 less than a male single parent? Maybe these are just practical decisions and not support for your anti-PC fantasies.

Yeah it's a huge property. I wonder what the status of the proposed station at the corner is. It's silly if it doesn't get built considering Langara Gardens across the street to the north will be getting lots of density too. To the east is/was the bus parking for translink and i believe will be redeveloped as well.
