I'm assuming that the renovations will be fairly sympathetic to the original? At least that's what I'd expect from an architecture firm.

It's a great building but it was poorly maintained in recent years... There was quite a bit of work to do no matter who bought it.

It's amusing to think of what our old street names would be if current naming fads had prevailed back then. Donald Street? No, it's "Donald Alexander Smith (Lord Strathcona) Way"!

Where was their office? The only company that I knew of that offices there was EH Price. And I think that was just their sales office before Price built the big office addition to their plant in EK.

When I lived on Weatherstone Place it was nearly renamed Arpin Bay, after a former city Councillor. No title, first name or middle names. The name was recently used in Island Lakes. Again, no title, first name or middle names.
Maybe I miscommunicated that. I would love them to officially, permanently shorten the name. That's my point. Maybe this guys name is obvious. names it Amarjit St. Done. No issues. when it goes on for four or five names, that's too much.

But like my example of Peguis. When my dad says Peguis, I need to ask if he's talking about the street in Trasncona or the expressway in NK. Because its both. You're not going to right on a piece of mail just Peguis. Need to include the full name. Although the postal code should figure all that out anyways.

Anyways, all those names are just silly. Donald, perfect example. They even gave him Donald St AND Smith St. Fort and Garry. Rant over on the street names.

In 2009 the City renamed Water Avenue to William Stephenson Way... the way they're going with their bloated street names, I'm sure if the renaming had taken place today they would have opted for something like "Sir William Samuel Stephenson, CC, MC, DFC Way" instead.

Fair enough. Of course this means I'm going to submit "Pi" as a street name suggestion, just to see if they expand it to full length.

Pi would be a perfect name for one of those circular streets that run through a new residential neighbourhood

I would prefer "Pie" street. Imagine the possibilities: Apple Pie Street, Cherry Pie Lane, Rhubarb Pie Way, Raisin Pie Blvd, Chicken Pot Pie Drive, Rue de la Tortierre, etc...

What a weird thing to be worked up about.
Some cultures, the full name is very important. Leave it at that.
Besides that, any guesses on how may Doctor Martin Luther King Boulevards there are in the states? Don't bother them none.
We have St. Mary road and St. Mary's avenue... Or is it the other way around? I always mess that up.
It's just a street name.

My fathers name is on the official city "list" for EK Transcona and will have to a full name as not to duplicate other names Winnipeg. Has to be a Wallace (or Wally) Lewis as there is already a Lewis St. in the village area.

Unfortunately the developers don't have to use the official city list(s) from each community area but can submit their own names at the time they propose the development.

When the family was approached for approval the city did not offer using Wallace as they did not want to use it as it might confuse the 911 system as Wallace Ave exists in East St. Paul next Hwy 101.

There is some sort of screening the city uses to try and avoid new duplicates and names that sound alike.

Probably about 50 years ago a large number of street names we changed in pre-unicity cities/Rm's next to Winnipeg to avoid duplication for the new 999 system. An example I am aware of is Melrose street in EK was renamed to Kimberly as the Melrose in Transcona was apparently the more senior name in use. I also believe that Kelvin St in Elmwood was changed to Henderson Hwy as not to be confused with Kelvin Blvd in Tuxedo.

That goes back to when they were in separate cities. When Winnipeg and the surrounding municipalities merged into Metro Winnipeg back around 1960, a lot of duplicate street names had to be changed.

The general rule was that the street with the most address kept its name. But in some cases public pressure kept a street name as is.

You might be right on Metro being the reason for the street name changes and not to reduce confusion for the 999 system at the time.

When I'm looking to buy a house and the street name is 5 words long or is something like Jim Gauthier Dr, that's a turn off for me.. Maybe I'm just picky that way.

Word is it will be a close reproduction of the original facade.

I was surprised they allowed even more "Park" names with Park West and Park East in Waverley West. Anything with "park" in it sells, I guess. Sort of like there are about 100 different "Harvard" streets around Metro Boston.

Maybe it was mentioned a while back, but is this demolition of 394 Portage/15 floor addition to Bradburn Building a residential, mixed use or office project? Does anyone know this information yet?

It's actually spelled a bit different in each case.

St. Mary Avenue is the street within the downtown Winnipeg area.

St. Mary's Road is the street cutting through St. Boniface and St. Vital suburbs. Notice the appostrophe.

Please no Osbourne St. stuff. It's Osborne St...no 'u' in there, despite what your American spellchecker recommends to you. Osbourne is as in Ozzy Osbourne, which is WHOM the Street was NOT named after.

If you can't remember, see it like this...

Os (like T.O.'s Ossington) + born (like a newborn baby) + e

Os-born-e
