How many times do we need to see the same picture?

People seemed to fall all over themselves when the initial renders came out and there was nary a mention of crown lighting then - if it's ugly AF then how come people weren't complaining long ago? Everyone seemed to love the building as depicted in the renders and the real thing is quite faithful to said renders.

Saw that Brookfield had the crown lighting on last night, I was too far away to take a picture with any sort of quality but from McKnight and 4th Street NW it looks okay, subtle but not overwhelming

Yes but the night renders showed an irregular interesting pattern of lights making the crown at night quite unique. Apparently what's there now is quite unimaginative and boring?? Can't see much of the building now as Park Point destroyed most of my view of the tower. Perhaps someone could post what's there now at night??

Because ever since this building was first announced there was a big buzz from people who'd seen models and renderings that it would have an amazing crown with a nice light feature.

So is the lit up crown at night at least brighter than the Bow?

Edit: Nm. Checked out suburbia's twitter link. Yeah, quite underwhelming. A lightbox would have looked better and had more even distribution of light. That just looks half assed.

From the pictures inside the crown, the lighting up there almost looks to be fluorescent light bars, hardly enough to light it up properly, mostly just service lighting I would think. Hope I'm wrong...

That is exactly what it is, and was corroborated by the photo in the Canada Day tweet that I provided the link to. The spacing and look of the lights map directly to the six fluorescent light bars that we had seen photos of.

Did you see that photo?

See:

(I had originally provided July 2nd)

I think they just cut costs.

O'well. Maybe one day someone will buy the building from them and redo the crown lighting.

Odd that not a one of those renders made it to this thread.

This opinion piece in the Calgary Herald from 2012 is interesting.

"New downtown office tower something a three-year-old with Lego could design"

Source: http://calgaryherald.com/opinion/columni...-a-three-year-old-with-lego-could-design

Licia Corbella clearly wasn't a fan of the design.

From that "article":

Quote:
Why does Calgary’s city council allow such atrocities? If I were on City Council I would work tirelessly to ensure we developed a downtown building code that wouldn’t allow rectangles to be built anymore. It’s so terribly sad that Calgary’s skyline is so utterly boring and uninspired.
I find it ironic that a person who gripes constantly about how much things cost would complain about this design.

Here’s an idea. Next time, get a 10-year-old with Lego to design Calgary’s next skyscraper. They’ll do a better job.
Ah yes, the old "My kid could design / paint / do something creative better than that" argument. Funny enough Telus Sky looks like it's made out of Lego and looks 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 awesome!

Somehow I doubt that. Didn't someone in the know post on here a while back saying that the Italian lighting system they had was having issues? Sounds like they must have been prohibitively expensive to fix.

Sounds more like blowing smoke to me with that Italian light thing.

Got a look at the lighting last night, can't be the final design, looks very temporary to me.

We should all chip a couple hundred bucks so they can at least add some LED's that change colors or something?
