MMPT - I need to be schooled on this

When this was announced like 10 years ago the cost was $1.1 Billion. So the cost today is $1.5+ Billion. When I look at all of the projects proposed in the city and then prioritizing them based on benefits to the community and return on investment, this project doesn't even show up on my radar.

I really would appreciate someone who is for the MMPT explain why the COA should make a significant investment in this project over other proposed projects. Maybe I am missing something and someone here can square the circle for me because I just don't see it.

[QUOTE=jsvh;7840489]Lets not forget what is also going on in every direction around it too. You got "The stitch" and midtown to the north, O4W / Edgewood / Beltline to the east, GSU / Carter / Turner Field redevelopment to the south east, West End and the start of all the Beltline West Side Trail developments t the south west, and the Vine City projects to the west.

Oops i meant to say "the stitch" when i said gulch..

I personally think its a long term thing, I think of it as affirming Atlanta's position as leader of the south for the foreseeable future. Economically don't you think that a major transport Hub in Downtown will bring in a lot of economic benefits in the long run, such as more growth in the city core, more tourists, etc..? I can think of many great things a transport hub would potentially bring to the city. With that being said I don't favor it over other proposed projects, it would just be great if it went alongside other proposed projects.

At $1.5+ Billion, the city would not be able to afford other projects. I just feel there is more bang for the buck and benefit to the whole city to expand MARTA and complete the Beltline with light rail as opposed to a centralized transportation hub. However, if I can get the money tree in my backyard to grow I would support every project ever conceived being built all at once.

Well I agree with you there, if I had to choose between marta expansion and building a central transport hub, I would go with marta expansion, it would make more sense. It would be great though if they find a way to build the MMPT, it would make things easier and more practical as far as transit goes, and beneficial to the economy in the long run.

To be clear I don't think it makes sense to build out the whole MMPT today, but it would be awesome if this redevelopment includes a bus bay, provisions that would allow commuter rail terminal to be built out in the lower parking deck level, and direct connection into Five Points MARTA.

Considering how things go in Atlanta, I am not expecting it to have any component for MMPT. The project sounds like it may be a boon to the area either way. Throw in transit expansion and beltline build-out to come and Atlanta could really be a whole other city again in ten-twenty years.

Folks, this is not likely to be MMPT - more likely a major entertainment district/mixed use development associated with the arena.

Kasim tends to push private investment (or public/private at most ala stadium) and this would require all city funds/match dollars.

The "entertainment district" is clearly what we are getting in the Gulch. The question is will it be designed in such a way to allow the MMPT to exist underneath. The MMPT was always planned to be under private development. Agree even without any provisions for MMPT, redeveloping the Gulch is a great thing.

Hope that you are right-- This would be great. MMPT would need local, state and federal financing-- none of which are (unfortunately) available. This is most certainly a private development, probably done in conjunction with the Hawks primary ownership (or his brother). Likely with some city infrastructure help.

Think the Mayor Reed announcement is about funding beltline transit and MARTA taking over the streetcar.

What leads you to believe that?

Man, I sure hope something drastic happens to make Icon look a lot nicer than it does right now. That hulking 70' concrete wall on West Peachtree, the narrow ribbons of windows, the odd cantilever on the south side, and the grated block of utility closets on the south face--there's a lot to be concerned about with this building.

I share all of your concerns, except I think (hope) the hulking wall will look nice when they're done with it. There'll be art one side facing 14th, and I would bet the side facing West Peachtree will become very pricey advertising space (electronic, perhaps?)

Midtown's SPI districts don't allow billboards on buildings like that. The "arts and entertainment" district is only for a portion of downtown Atlanta.

In this interview Mayor Reed talks about the streetcar, but at around 1:48 into the video he mentions a new 42 story building he announced for downtown.. does anyone know anything about that?
