Bill Kennedy Way was a rail line up until a decade or so ago. Think they still have some of the rail remaining north of Memorial @ BKW that they are pulling up to put in the Beltline. H Harper Station, across the street was a small train station originally.

But Hulsey yard is the closest rail yard and don't think this site was ever a rail yard.

I'm really disappointed with this. As part of a pretty exciting development and in such a visible spot I was really hoping for something a bit more impressive.

Atlanta Council approves car rental tax deal for Philips renovation (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

The Council on Monday approved a deal between the city and College Park to extend car rental tax collections beyond their 2038 sunset to raise at least $110 million to fund a $192.5 million update of Philips, the city’s downtown Atlanta sports and entertainment complex.

“I want to thank you for your support for this important motion,” Mayor Kasim Reed told the council in a rare live appearance after the vote. “In the next 10 to 15 days we should be coming forward with a proposal for an additional billion dollars in investment as a result of the decision you all made today.”

I assume he is talking about the redevelopment of the Gulch that has been rumored?

I'm sure Serta would not favor one customer over another, but it would be cool to have dual flagship Mattress Firm stores in this location- perhaps one integrated into the headquarters itself. Think of all the innovation in mattress technology which could happen in this one location!

No - the Mayor did not support a Casino downtown. The project is a hotel, residential, retail and entertainment district in the Gulch. My golf buddy is a banker on this project he said it is massive - think LA Live. Be very excited!!!

With this, Underground, and the land grab along Mitchell, South Downtown is going to be unrecognizable in a few years.

It will be nice to see the desirability of Downtown grow over the next few years. The more dense and desirable neighborhoods in Atlanta, the better. I imagine Midtown, Downtown, West End, West Midtown, neighborhoods along the EST, and Buckhead will all grow a lot more dense and walkable by 2025. Should make a few more neighborhoods more palatable to most.

Wow, in the coming years downtown should have a renovated peachtree center
mall, renovated and expanded centennial park, renovated and expanded underground, renovated south downtown area, and now a brand new entertainment district, all this along with a few other things coming up. If all this goes to plan, downtown should finally feel complete and vibrant in just a few years time, truly amazing.. The only thing left to make this even more incredible is building the stitch, then we will finally have a continuous uninterrupted city core.

Lets not forget what is also going on in every direction around it too. You got "The stitch" and midtown to the north, O4W / Edgewood / Beltline to the east, GSU / Carter / Turner Field redevelopment to the south east, West End and the start of all the Beltline West Side Trail developments t the south west, and the Vine City projects to the west.

If MMPT is part of the vision, then it would make it a whole lot better, I hope so.

does anyone know who 'owns' the Gultch? I'm sure the railroads will keep rights to their space, as well as Marta. Perhaps only the air rights will be sold, which will preserve the ground level parking for future use. While a bus terminal would be nice as part of the MMPT, I imagine with atlanta's climate, that could be easily worked in along city streets later (like civic center Marta station) and having a dedicated but facility would probably be pushing it economically. I think as long as implements for commuter rail are preserved, we are good.

Norfolk Southern owns the railroad ROW's
The State of Georgia owns a good deal of the land
The city of Atlanta owns some of the properties
GDOT and MARTA are also significant stakeholders

But without any leadership backing the project (national, state, city) the project fell flat in its previous incarnation.
