There's a new bar open on Main st. making it 4 bars between 300 s and 400 s (if you count Maxwell's). Significant as the law used to be no more than 2 bars per city block.

There's a lot of tension lately on this forum as we're not getting towers, however a positive for downtown is that it's very alive on Friday and Saturday nights.

Have anyone heard anything about new tenants for Regent Street?

There are ten new retail spaces on the east side of the street, but I see no signs of anyone moving in.

The only new places we have are the pizza place on the west and signs for a Nashville Chicken joint.

Maybe demand is just not there for new retail downtown. We've seen some new life on main, but there are still multiple empty storefronts on Main, and now these ten empty spots on Regent.

Not sure

Not sure if this has been mentioned. I know the CCh topic is getting ran into ground. This was mentioned in the Idaho business Review. Scroll to the purple section mentions something about the Utah legislature approving the hotel to start building 2018. http://idahobusinessreview.com/2017/06/13/for-idaho-the-year-of-the-hotel/

New small hotel--I think one of the lower end Marriott brands (Spring Hill Suites?).

The legislature approved the tax incentive years ago. Shawn Stinson is just being optimistic about the CCH starting in 2018.

I assume they'll share the Holiday Inn parking garage as this little hotel is being built by the owners of Holiday Inn.

That's better than surface parking. Not by much but it is better.

SLC has plenty of parking. An overabundance. They should easily find parking for their patrons.

What the hell is that suppose to be... a 12 room hotel?

Seriously! The city has got to stop approving this 6 story stucco — with no street engagement. I would rather keep the surface parking. At least that way there is a better chance of somthing worthy going there within the next 10 year. When you allow somone to build something like that... chances are that we will be looking at it for at least 30.

Is Salt Lake ever going to get serious about trying to get some people living down town? It’s pretty ridiculous as it currently stands. Building all of these 6 story apartment buildings with 100-300 units part of witch are subsidized isn’t helping. We really need to get serious about getting High density AFORDABLE housing in down town... and by afordable I mean housing that appeals to the average person making between 40-70k. Not subsidized housing for those making 25k... I think we are okay in that bepartment.

Living downtown is just not attractive to your everyday Utahn. There are lots of great options for wealthy people and for people making little enough to get subsidized... but what about everyone else? First of all a lot of people like to buy because it’s a good long term investment. Most people in Utah can’t afford much over 250k. That will get you a small 1 bedroom place... Who wants that? A lot of people have kids... I live alone and wouldn’t even want a 1 bedroom place. It’s basically the same thing when it comes to Apartments. 2 bedroom apartments are very expensive and 3-4 bedroom apartments are rare.

As bad as the situation is, there is still a high demand for apartments witch is driving up the rates. I know there is a lot of surface parking that people are more then happy to see being replaced with six story residential... but eventually we are going to fill it all up with low density garbage.... Then property is going to need to be purchased, demolished, and redeveloped to bring in more density. This is going to drive up cost even more and add complications.

Why can’t we do this right from the beginning? We should be putting at least some high density apartment building up... That puts a lot of people in a smaller area and creates population density... Then we have more people out on the street requiring more retail.... but we also need to have it be afordable. City Creek is fine for what it is, but it’s not for most people. We need LOTS of 2-3 bedroom residentle under 300k and apartments that are as equally as afordable...

Right now Salt Lake is kind of like a business district with a few people living here and there.... it will never be a real city Until more people want to live here... bla

Here is Vivint... do you notice any changes? I barley do. I wish they would have done more to update the overall look of the buildings exterior... I’m sure the one corner will be a bit nicer from street level.... but we will pretty much be looking at the same thing. I’m excited to see the inside though.

Does anyone know what west high is doing with its field along 200 west? They have took down the fence and have been digging it all up. They put some sort of foundation in close to the diagonal property line. I’m not sure if it’s for a wall or for something else... they also have a bunch of big concreat manhole containers that look like they will be put in the ground.

I'm sorry but there's way too much dumb in this post. You are upset that your neighbors don't want the commodity that you don't want? Most of the residential going up in and immediately around the CBD is market rate. You don't want subsidized housing but you seem to expect a developer to offer units in a steal framed highrise at the same rent as a 4 plex on the periphery. You want demand for living downtown and you think that surface parking is going to accomplish that? You want cheaper rent but you want to stand in the way of cheap development ? Srsly like Srsly

Not sure what you're talking about. The one major thing SLC has going for it right now is the residential boom. You don't need tons of height to create a lot of units. (though it would be nice) And very few of these developments have subsidized housing. In fact the rents are fairly high. Most people in Utah can only afford a 250k house? Well that's a problem if true, because the avg. house price in Salt Lake County is 300k. 280k in Utah County. People are buying them. But it also shows why there's such an apartment boom in the SLC area.

I don't want cheap buildings, I want expensive buildings that are cheap, but not subsidized.

I want a time machine too

For example, Austin's tallest building (at 683 feet) sports 163 units. 4th West in SLC under construction is 5 stories tall and sports 497 units.

Vs.

Obviously the Austonian is way cooler. But it also has 1/3 the units. I realize it's a smaller footprint, but it's not like SLC doesn't have tons of land for use. We're not NYC.

Point being, SLC is adding a shitload of people right now.
