Wow. I have lived in Burnaby my whole life and actually do something in the region by being an inner city school teacher, a job that should be paid far more than it is. Given my position, which is a secure middle class job I should be able to afford something in my community. If you have people working for the public having to live in Chilliwack that is a problem.

You are fully aware that the "poor" people that are coming actually pay more taxes to the government than the rich immigrants that have come from the investor program. Most of the latter still have jobs in their home countries and pay taxes there, which means we cannot collect the money that we are due and have homes with inflated values. It is then a knock on effect as homes further way are inflated in value causing undue hardships for people. And yes, the immigrants are poor people who should be given the opportunity to live a decent life here. They should not be fleeing their countries only to find further hardships here. I guess we can add poverty to the list of stigmas and discrimination.

BTW, I was able to purchase a 1-bedroom in the Brentwood area. Had to save like crazy to make it work but I will be living at Escala in a couple of years. I have no sympathy for others who are in my position (living at home not paying rent and a middle class job), who cant afford a place to live because of poor financial decisions, such as eating out every night and going on $5000 vacations rather than paying their loans and saving. By the time I move into my unit I would have given 40% down. I have a friend whose brother and sister-in-law have spent close to $100,000 in vacations over the last 3 to 4 years. That is what I call unwise. To me, buying a valuable property is the #1 most important thing in life, which is why I sacrificed a lot of fun, had less of a social life, and years with no vacations to do what I did. The key thing here is that few are lucky as I to have parents who have not charged me rent. Once you have to pay student loans and rent even a middle class job or two is not enough. You will never be able to own, which should not be the case if the market was tied to local conditions.

As for the comparison to Manhattan and Beverly Hills . One has superior weather and the other a much more vibrant cityscape and job prospects. In the grand scheme of things we are a provincial backwater, a pleasant place, but a speck in the grand scheme of things.

Lastly, I am a hug fan of density and building towers/condos. In fact, I have gone to Chicago to see true skyscrapers, have a skyscraper calendar in my bedroom, and routinely walk around the Brentwood area marveling at the development that is occurring. I get excited at the prospect of seeing 25 new towers in the area in five years. I also do the same thing along Beresford Street when I have time for a walk during lunch. I like looking at Metroplace, the newly finished Modello, and the construction at Gold House. Now, with Sun Towers I have another site to visit. I know that we cannot keep areas locked in time and need development to occur to maintain the vitality of a city. Otherwise, we will be Detroit or the Commercial Drive area, the only area in Vancouver (Grandview-Woodlands) that has seen a population decrease. Those towers on the Safeway site need to be built and built now, not ten years from now. NIMBYism at its finest in an area that could use a revamp. However, I believe that we can do better in the way we are developing that will not cause such hardship for residents. It is the role of the citizens to elect officials who will make the right decisions and for politicians to follow through. The developers wont do it as their interests are to make money. I am looking forward to seeing pictures of the development of Sun Towers, and a municipal government that has better policy proposals for affordability for displaced residents.

You act as if there are no Vancouver born-and-raised poor or middle-class folks who receive that sort of public assistance and who are the ones being impacted the housing and real estate mess right now.

Let's not play this xenophobic "blame the immigrant or the outsiders for all our problems" game that's infected our cousins south of the border with their political situations that's seeing them become a pariah on the world stage.

You don't know the identity of the people* who vandalized those buildings any more than you can say with any certainty that the activists behind this movement are immigrants or poor ones at that.
Since when has blaming immigrants ever solved any problems of any country on this planet as opposed to starting problems (And wars). Particularly for a country that's heavily reliant on immigration and immigrant populations as Canada obviously is.
They're easy targets; I get that.

But it's wrong either way (even when blaming immigrants on the other side of the wealth line for causing the housing crisis by foreign money).

I mean, "importing poverty"???

Come on, man.
We're supposed to be better than that.

I mean, what you going to do next? Say that we build a wall?

Geeez.

(* and if you do know their identities then you should report them to the police, and stop playing amateur police detective on the internet)
I'm not even talking about the people who vandalised that property, I am simply referring to what someone said about immigrants and government funded programs. I was saying immigrants should not be granted government-funded programs because Canada should not be letting in poorer people in. If we are going to be having immigrants come in, they should be skilled and not relying on the government. The same goes for foreign investors, they should not be allowed to simply buy properties left and right without actually living in Canada. That's just creating false wealth like letting in poor immigrants is creating false poverty.

Also, why are just implying so many things. I never said I was playing "false detective". You're just attacking me rather than attacking my arguments. "We're supposed to be better than that" when I say bringing in poor people makes poverty exist in Canada is not an argument.

First time someone has ever said something on this forum that pissed me off. Been a member since 2005.

I was born and raised in Vancouver and now live in Burnaby and can't come close to buying a house in my hometown. Think about what you say before you say it. Being pushed out of your hometown is not as easy as you make it out to be.

Your comment on importing poverty is uncalled for and very immature.

Nicely done buddy.

He's completely right, albeit Canada does it at a good reasonable rate (in comparison to Europe).

I've grown up in South Burnaby/New West, and the crime was 50/50 white trash/second+third generations and the other 50 was first generation immigrants.

Look at the local street Somali gangs that run around Edmonds committing petty crimes, I've seen figures and you can literally see a rollercoaster trend, they commit, get sentenced, when they are out rinse repeat.

ANYWAYS...

It is troubling what is going on with these easy to assemble lots in Burnaby, a ton of these lowrises and larger industrial lots are being scooped up, rezoned into towers/townhomes. Anyone remember when the old Burnaby South site was redeveloped? "We very much intend for this area to stay light industrial", drive around now and it's a weird mix of townhomes and light industrial.

Corrigan has a personal vandetta against the Metro lowrises, prices for one bedrooms around Eastern Burnaby and New West has shot up well over $1000.

All I can add is that I don't get the anger and lack of kindness in the words used by those complaining about the poor, the place of immigrants, a bit of graffiti protest (regardless of it being pointless and against the law) . . .

When large scale transition occurs in residential areas, a bit of friction is part of the equation. To get angry about it can only result from a childish perspective. Is this what really gets you people pissed off. I'd argue that you should be less petty and save the vitriol for more important things. Good God!

Look, Burnaby is a rich neighbourhood. Although it might not seem like it, it is.

Now you could argue that people bringing in money from overseas, pumping up the houses prices isn't really free market and just creates artificial bubbles that make housing prices moon is a problem, and I agree, it's not natural housing prices. However, housing prices are also high because of high local demand, and if they are high for those reasons, if it's too expensive, move. No one in Scarsdale Westchester or Southampton Suffolk County is complaining about how high housing prices are 'forcing' them to move elsewhere.

Also, why can't people wrap around their heads that bringing in poor people is literally importing poverty? What about that is wrong? All I've heard as """"""arguments"""""" is "Wow really pal nice going", which isn't an argument. What's immature is not addressing the point.

Also, immigration raises housing prices too. You know, more demand and fewer houses to supply them.

Also, maybe you aren't, but when you say " Being pushed out of your hometown is not as easy as you make it out to be" you might be implying I have money, I don't. My parents came as refugees and don't exactly own property or any 'assets'. I'm leaving Van.

That's because your arguments are dumb.
Period.

But just to be clear I was attacking them and not you personally, because like I've said they were dumb arguments.
Let's unpack just how dumb.

Refugees are by definition, poor - i.e people who've lost everything they own (including their very homes) due to war in their countries.
Should we close our doors to them to since (by your idiotic logic) letting them in, is essentially "importing poverty"?

Are you even listening to yourself?
What the hell's the matter with you?

That's the basic grain of your logic right there.

This discussion had NOTHING to do with immigrants at all.
Especially poor immigrants.
That's something that YOU wedged into it because you had an axe to grind when it wasn't related to what was being discussed.

And the only point at which you brought into the discussion rich immigrant investors was when I actually mentioned them in my comment, by way of making a point.
Don't sit there and act like they were part of the point you were making when it's apparent they weren't even part of your original comment or point.

Stop trying to insult people's intelligence here.
We can see right through you.

And yes, I'll repeat :
We're supposed to be better than that.

And that includes calling out people when they decide they want to pick on those they deem weaker and less able to defend themselves by way of looking for scapegoats to blame for problems they have nothing to do with.
Like you're trying to do here.

Nobody here argues the fact that the people who vandalized that building broke the law, and that they, like the activists, are probably going about this whole thing with raising their issues with the housing crisis the wrong way, particularly if they hope to win over the support of neutral parties who might otherwise agree with them.
But at the same time, who does it benefit scapegoating the wrong people for it or for the larger issue with the housing situation.
Are poor immigrants driving up housing and real estate values in GVA? (or anywhere else for that matter?)
And if your beef is really with the rich immigrant investors then why didn't you make your comment just about them or even mention them at all until I brought it up?

I think we all know the answer to those questions.

You know I didn't even mention the vandalisation right? I didn't even read the article when I posted that comment. You just threw vandalism into what I was saying.

Also, yes, bringing in poor people is importing poverty. Is that that hard to understand.

Let's break it down

Bringing in people who are poor

Bringing in = Importing
People who are poor = Poverty

Wow, it's almost like you didn't even argue what I was saying and just said "Are you even listening to yourself?
What the hell's the matter with you?"

But I mean you did agree with me when you said: "Refugees are by definition, poor - i.e people who've lost everything they own (including their very homes) due to war in their countries". Yes, we shouldn't let them in because it's not Canada's problem and there are too many people in the world that Canada or the developed world doesn't have the means for to "help" through immigration. 80 million babies are born in the Third World every year.

The only way for countries to be fixed and to bring them out of poverty is for them to fix themselves. Japan and Europe did it after WW2, and so did South Korea soon after. Sounds cynical, but it's the only way it can happen.

That's something that YOU wedged into it because you had an axe to grind when it wasn't related to what was being discussed.

Where are they supposed to go? Most of the people in the area are recent immigrants to the city and do not have the means to support themselves in the new developments. There needs to be a variety of options for them in the city and replacement rental units, a policy that we do not have given that we lost 492 rental units in the last few years.

I gotta say, the majority of the 'poor' that come to Canada have far more willingness to contribute than the typical born and bred Canadian who is poor.

You should really cut your losses with that argument and move on, one has only so many feet to shoot off.

Not really sure it's an argument. He's just stating a fact

Also, it's judgmental to say the majority of the imported poor are more willing to contribute than Canadian poor. Seems like sweeping generalizations

Which is weird (not really) because that's what was being discussed before you decided to butt in with your useless flame-throwing wedge issue.

But I can see where the problem in all this lies.....

Doesn't bother to find out what's being discussed before deciding to jump in with both feet and enlighten the world with his ignorance.

Imagine how (NOT) surprised and shocked I am to find you didn't even know what you were responding to before you decided to respond.

No, actually I just threw it in there, because that's what was being discussed.

The vandalism of the walk-up building that the Sun Towers (you know, the topic that this thread is named for).

Next time how about you try reading first before opening your mouth and stuffing your whole hoof inside, huh?
Go back and read what the person you were responding to was responding to and talking about themselves, along with other people he was talking to and stop wasting everyone's time here with your laziness to perform even the most basic task in taking part in a discussion.

That wasn't me agreeing with you.
That is just you showing you have a massive problem with basic reading English comprehension if you think that was me agreeing with you.
Which, coming from a person who just admits that they didn't bother reading about or knowing what was being discussed before deciding to opine in with their 'pearls of wisdom'....isn't so surprising.

But thank you for answering my question regarding whether you think Canada should let in refugees or not.....

At least now we know for certain what we're dealing with here.

You have such a nonsensical simplistic way of looking at the world, devoid of any context or actual historical context, that it's laughable to think you're a product of the Canadian educational system.

Way too much stupidity and ignorance packed in that comment for me to bother trying to tackle or wasting any more time with.

Probably not.

I can't believe they couldn't come up with a better name for the office space.

There are a number of "Sun" related words, like:

Core
Corona
Flare

or one of the sun gods:

Ra
Helios
Sol

The large rendering shows that there will be white spandrel galore. The color stripes look just as poor as the ones on Aldynne.
