but $$$ was still spent there.. cheaper to do it right than do it twice

and while there's always going to be competing priorities, transportation projects in edmonton seem to fall right off the list

somehow calgary manages to have 2/3 overpass projects going at any given time, but getting a new stretch of quality road in edmonton is a once in a lifetime event!

I'm more curious as to why a 6-lane median divided roadway is set to 50 km/h

$$$ again, I'm sure it's a photo radar favorite

saw no less than 3 speed traps on terwillegar yesterday.. good to see the ticket revenue being maximized there before someone wrecks it with overpasses and a proper speed limit

I don't think it had anything to do with money, the capacity of the road is just fine, especially with the Henday and an upgraded Yellowhead taking the pressure off of it

The biggest issue with that stretch is the extremely poor quality of the work, the road is heaved and buckling in places. Even by our low standards in Edmonton the quality of the work is terrible.

As for the Transit, I suspect it'll either eventually be knocked down or mysteriously catch on fire. No one cares about it anyways so good riddance I suppose

I would say it's actually overbuilt, but higher speed limits wouldn't work well with number of cross streets and especially with the ambiguous design of the bus station access at Belvedere and the merge before the underpass.

Widening the underpass wouldn't even help because the yellowhead turn lanes back up so much, and if they do close 66st at the yellowhead that intersection will be waaay to big for the traffic. It's already more than it needs to be with 5 lanes including turn lanes on the south side of fort road.

Besides the long-hoped for redesign of the WGD/FR/YH interchange the only road expansion the area needs is giving those school buses that stop for long times in the traffic lane on 66st some other place to park.

and the road quality degrades quicker with all the stop/start traffic and resting vehicles. freeflow is better for both road and vehicle maint, and results in lower emissions. freeways, when done well, can actually be pretty green

I don't see fort rd competing with AHD or yellowhead either, but rather as part of an eastern N/S route through the city. I'd love to see something like the following as a full crosstown Gretzky Drive

It appears the Stantec Crane is now the highest point in the city.

Whoa! That is some serious cantilevering going on there!

Don't think anyone has mentioned yet, a couple of the really old ugly apartment blocks still situated on 124th street have been demolished; just north of Stony Plain Rd. Anyone hear if there is plans for something going up right away?

I see the Bank of Montreal is moving into the Enbridge Building in the "new" Swedish Jewellers facade - according to the permit on the door. Is there any news on what is happening to the BoM Building they are vacating?

Century Park design aims to pilot new shared parking model for Edmonton.

Council approved a massive new re-design for the Century Park area Monday, piloting what developer ProCura calls a new European approach to residential parking.

“We need to get up to date with the times. Having apartments with 24-7 stalls is from the ’70s,” said the developer George Schluessel, describing a shared model where the same stalls can be used by residents, employees and transit park-and-ride users at different times of the day. Normally that’s prohibited by zoning rules.

George George...When you say get with the times...are you saying Edmonton doesn't need glass buildings either!

Schluessel better work on these designs. The whole project to me Is so confused and fugly.

24-7 stalls is from the 70s lol.... —. Yeah im gonna buy a place where my parking stall is only mine for part of the time. So if I come home early from work or get a day of im — out of luck....Mmmmm, not happening.

BOM was purchased by Regency. Short to medium term likely office or retail, long-term I expect a tall mixed-use.

I'd like to see BOM building converted to a department store.

With no or inadequate public parking underground, or that could be made free from neighbouring parkades it's highly improbable a department store would want that location ... at least not Saks or Nordstrom. Risky business.

Does anyone know what the parking is like underneath ... levels and number of stalls? Digging that up will add big costs to a future tower project.
