That's right. Until city council snuffed it out with its biased viewcone survey, Holborn was looking to build the tallest tower in Vancouver (700-750 feet).

I was watching the news without sound at lunch today, there was a story that said VGH received an $18 million donation... can't find any news sources yet. It was on CTV news at noon

If it wasn't for the fact that I have a couple friends and my barber out there, I don't think I would ever bother to drop in... It's a really dead neighbourhood.
Unrelated note, I love my barber because he always has Mr. Bean and James Bond on the TV. Plus, you know... he cuts my hair well.

Santa Fe Apartments Update May 28th, 2017

My photos - May 28th, 2017 (pardon the jagged panorama photo)

The Santa Fe is nearing completion. If you look carefully, you can see appliances in some of the units.

Testing the waters

The City of Vancouver has been approached by a development team (developer, architect, and property owner) about a potential redevelopment of the Safeway site located at 1780 East Broadway, at Commercial Drive. The Grandview-Woodland Community Plan provides guidance about how this site should redevelop and sets a requirement to provide a new at- grade public plaza on the site (see section 6.7.1, page 112-113 of the updated version online here).
The development team is proposing that the plaza be located at an alternative location nearby. While this is variation from the approved Community Plan, the City wants to work with the community to give this new idea its due consideration.
To introduce and explore the idea of an alternative plaza location, the City is hosting an event. The primary purpose of the event is to assess the degree of community support for the new plaza idea.

The event is free, but advance registration is required (see below).
Community feedback will be used to inform next steps in the process, as the City considers the rezoning enquiry. Please note that if this enquiry proceeds to a rezoning application there will be further opportunities for community consultation on all aspects of the application.
Please note: To ensure the broadest number of community members have a chance to participate, individual registration (name, address and email) is required for each person wishing to attend the event. No bulk registrations will be available. The event is intended primarily for people who live or work in Grandview-Woodland or near the Safeway site

Event details are as follows:
The proposed workshop will take place:
DATE: Thursday, June 8, 2017
TIME: 7:00pm to 8:30pm
LOCATION: Croatian Cultural Centre
The event is free; however to assist with organizing the event, advance registration is required.
If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact Zoë Greig, Planning Assistant, at 604-829-2015, or [email protected].

i like the board-formed concrete.

Love how the security lights and wall outlets are placed like pimples on the feature wall, while the drywall is left untouched.

With a fantastic view of the city, this is a great spot for a plaza. I just hope the community doesn't have their usual kneejerk reaction and shoo away what would be a huge addition to the neighbourhood.

Curious to know how far west the plaza would extend.

This is an interesting idea, that stretch of Commercial Drive is truly the worst, imo, and maybe it would push the city to do something about the litter and trash along the the rail right of way in the cut.

I grew up as an elementary school kid in 90s living in the BC Housing complex adjacent to the Safeway. I just can't see the plaza being utilized on that site, it's a good place for housing density, but not a public plaza, a little too quiet.

Over the cut adjacent to the Millennium Line is an excellent location that is both high traffic and more central within the active side of the community, and as longan mentioned would host a great view.

2221 Main Street

My Photos - June 1st, 2017

This is the VAHA project for the existing parking lot at Main St. + E 7th Ave. It went to UDP on May 31st and passed with recommendations. One of the recommendations is to provide an entrance to the housing on the south face of the building. Edit - That's what I get for using a second person's perspective, this proposal was actually recommended for resubmissionat the UDP meeting.

There will be retail on the north and east sides. A restaurant will face the new park. The design of the park will be determined by the Park's Board.

Absurdly, the local business group has demanded that the existing parking lot be replaced spot for spot. As such, there will be roughly 50 parking stalls for residents and over 150 commercial stalls, a minority of which are required for the restaurant and retail. Apparently they provided City Staff with a study showing the parking is needed, but it seems beyond sense to me.

By the time I left at around 6:15pm, only about 30 members of the public had passed through the doors. Most of the time it felt like there were more people connected with the project in the room than anyone from the public. I should also note, Changing City has some other recent information about the project: https://changingcitybook.com/2017/06/02/2221-main-street/

thanks for the update. Don't see any improvement. Still think too harsh, sterile for a residential building. Also not a good place for patio seating... too busy , noisy, dusty.

will probably plant some trees etc which will help. but 12th is less terrible then Cambie at least when it comes to patio space. not exactly a lot of options at this intersection.

1880-1898 Main Street - Updated Renderings from the Open House

The original design
http://rezoning.vancouver.ca/applications/1800-1880main/index.htm

My photos from the open house on June 1st.

The open house for this project was held at the same place (different room), and at the same time as 2220 Main Street. Perhaps because the room for this open house was on the 2nd floor, it had an even smaller attendance. Only around 20 people had passed through by the time I left at 7 pm.

As shown, the design has changed slightly. The south side of the ground floor is planned as a restaurant, while the north side bordering 2nd avenue is planned as retail. Currently it's designed to be one retail unit, but it can easily be broken into 2 units.

A key element of this building is the effective use of space. For example, the northwest corner of each residential floor is location of the 3 bedroom units. This fills that awkward narrow corner space quite effectively. The team acknowledged that noise will be a concern for the building, as it is on any major street.

Are they fniished installing the fins on the black/gray upper "block"?
It looks like they stopped installing them (because they block the view from the windows?), which makes it look unfinished.
