The Social Corner (site of the infamous green turf patio table tops) is building a proper (stepped) patio on Homer Street - saw the workers out there this morning.

Well that's interesting. I wonder if Chipotle is going to take both frontages in the building. Currently there's only a notice in the door of the vacant eastern section. As such, I just assumed that Chipotle was taking over the vacant space and Peaceful would remain in place.

should be interesting to see what this turns out to be. Hopefully it is like a bluewater/cincin/west and does not take on the typical yaletown formula.

Yes... well, I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt... Also interesting that they say La Taqueria will be competition even though it will be gone from it's current location as soon as the redevelopment starts.

they didn't even mention chronic tacos which is within 2 blocks away being competition. And they were always pretty good haven't really been in years though.

My photo - May 25th, 2017

The mural on the old Mongolie Grill is now completely covered up. I was hoping that A&W would at least be replace it with a painting of the Burger Family.

A Vancouver restaurant facing a $65,000 monthly rent increase says it’s forced to relocate amid skyrocketing rent, as industry insiders fear the booming real estate market is having a negative impact on local eateries.
Italian Kitchen has been serving pasta on Alberni Street in the downtown core for a decade, but is moving locations because its monthly rent of $35,000 will soon be increased to nearly $100,000.
“It is impossible for any restaurant, anywhere -- and I guarantee you this because I’ve been in this business for so many years -- any restaurant anywhere on the planet to be able to survive with this number,” said Emad Yacoub, president of Glowbal Restaurant Group.

Italian Kitchen's rent of $35,000 will soon be increased to $100,000 per month, so the Vancouver eatery is changing locations. (CTV)
But while Italian Kitchen has the resources to relocate to a space with a lower monthly rent, many smaller family-run restaurants don't....

one of the things on the window says that this location is available for franchise. So do they build it before even having someone to run it? Will they run it themseves until a franchisee buys it? is that how that stuff works?

Same could be said for pretentious eateries that 90% of Vancouverites will never step in. And he's moving a block so it's not as if he had to relocate to Langley to stay in business.

Trust me I'm no fan of the Global chain and the owner complaining about a landlord is a tad assuming considering the stories about his own behaviour to his own tenants. But the point of the story is still of concerns. Commercial gentrification sucks and we all lose out. Restaurants are one of the first businesses to bring about change to a neighbourhood, they chase cheap rents as the margins are low and they need them to make a go of things. They bring people back into these lowrent areas and then other stores start moving in and the area becomes hot and before you know it the very same forerunners are being evicted and we start to see the area decline as they move onto another front. People might see this as a success of Alberni St, but this is the beginning of the decline. It could take 10-15yrs to see it but it's turning and not for the better.

Isn't it just the same as any boom & bust cycle when the area all his restaurants are located would have been targeting the Japanese tourists in the 90s?

Are all those high end stores paying $100K a month for similar sized stores on Alberni?

The luxury area of Alberni is basically one block of downtown. Not exactly a harbinger of doom for restaurants and where the 99% shop.

Yeah that Italian Kitchen, such a hoity toity place.

This issue is being played out, albeit on a smaller scale, at businesses all over the city. When property values are driven up to insane levels by foreign and speculative money, everybody else suffers.
