Ugh I don't want to single Calgary out but those are just bad! I think Southern Ontario suburbs at least have better street presence now. And narrower streets. Although still very ugly:

South African suburbs are an interesting case study in ugly : https://goo.gl/maps/jKdCvjhjN712

Note the electric fences!

Umm, yes? The wide streets in the suburbs of Calgary and other cities are horrific. I even thought this as a teenager growing up there several decades ago. That 3m of asphalt could be used for a front yard. Although I guess they want to pave them over to park an extra car.

I'd honestly like to hear what positive you think it brings!

Being able to have 2 vehicles pass each other without having to stop. Pretty obvious really. Plays a huge roll in my choosing where I buy having roads wide enough.

Yeah, that's just sad. Is your 20 seconds really worth that? Doesn't seem to matter literally everywhere else in the world outside North America.

FYI - roll = role

Because I prefer living in areas that aren't cramped that is sad? I don't even like the street I live on now because my neighbors are too close. I would much prefer to have a yard about twice the size at least of what I have now. Thankfully, I don't share any walls though at least

I didn't say any of those things. You could have a huge house on a massive lot without an overly wide road. Maybe in your suburb you'd want a road that was a bit narrower to allow extra front lawn for kids to play. But you explicitly said being able to pass someone fast was the selling point. I think that is sad.

Edit: I almost got killed as a kid iin suburban Calgary because people sped down our overly wide street at 60+km/hr.

Now you're putting words in my mouth, I never said fast, just being able to do it. Which for me is not sad, I drive down some narrow streets and all that comes to my mind is I'm sure glad I don't have to deal with this every day! I have no dings or scratches on my vehicle and would like to keep it that way.

Also I really enjoyed playing street hockey as a kid, narrow roads suck for that too.

Oh and to me, narrow streets are ugly and belong in this thread. Yeah for personal preferences!

Just saw this sorry sight while looking at satellite images. A new area being built in Montreal in the Saint-Laurent borough. Don't know what that land was used for (the old Cartierville Airport is my guess), but now it's being rebuild as a McMansion suburban wasteland... Yuck.

Have a look at that piss poor urban planning:

At least your McMansions have what appears to be stone and a nice walk up staircase. Here it would be stucco with some tacked on fake stone accents and a 3 car garage occupying the entire front of the house.

I guess all of Europe and older historical areas of Quebec would belong in this thread then in your opinion.

Being that he lives in Airdrie it probably is one of the main factors. I mean what else is there to consider in Airdrie?

Here's the everflowing water faucet of Granby, in front of Castel Hotel.

I love it!!! Quebec is king of strip joints!!! Still pales in comparison to Sexe D'Or. What the hell is with that building though? It looks like a frankenstein mashup of an old Dairy Queen, an industrial building and something from a trailer park.

I don't get the faucet. It's like a literal faucet. What was the theme of the hotel that led them there? Is it foreshadowing the drippy bathroom sink that will keep you awake all night?

As for the auto shop I don't mind its' grimy authenticity.

Could any forumers from New Brunswick or Quebec find the location (streetview) or picture of the motel village stripclub that greets you as you cross the border from NB to QC? It was one of the most memorable images of my road trip to the Maritimes from 2005.

Airdrie is perhaps one of the most grim suburbs in Canada. Right up there with Milton and Laval!

Agreed. Even Strathmore has more charm. For all the flack Okotoks gets on here it's actually got a pleasant small town vibe that I kinda like. Of all Calgary's exurbs it's the only one I'd consider if forced to leave the city.

Strathmore at least has a main street and sort of downtown.

Airdrie has this: https://goo.gl/maps/Nm5Kec6Y2xx

Milton, as much of the poster child for sprawl at least has this: https://goo.gl/maps/pxzVPDtAfBH2

The section upon entering QC is pretty sparse, but was it one of these?

That highway has been completely redone since 2005 so I'm unsure if it's still there as I only really remember the new section.

Not sure what we're looking at here, beyond standard issue suburbia.
