What's the problem, spending money for the WPS regardless of cost only makes sense, Katz and Sheegl tried their best, you forget Winnipeg has a wonderful police helicopter and a new assault vehicle to deter crime!

Restoring the historic downtown post office headquarters into a repurposed police headquarters saved a great heritage building and probably saved one of downtown's much needed surface parking lots which might have been lost with a new build! A real win win for the city!

I hope that whatever ends up being built in its place adds to the growing vibrancy of the area.
It would be cool to see the River Rouge and Paddlewheel Queen implemented into the future site and turned into one of those museum/restaurant/hotel ships like the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. If there's little hope for riverboats on our rivers again we might as well try to save the last ones, cause the marine museum up in Selkirk seems to be tight for space.
The Paddlewheel Queen has been converted to a barge for use in northern MB, and the Paddlewheel Princess has been destroyed by fire. The River Rouge might yet be sold or salvaged in some way, but I do not have high hopes given the current owner. Without any large riverboat traffic, is there really any need for a large dock like this anymore? Converting it into a park and public marina of some sort might be nice, but doubtful it would see much use. I would like to see boating revived on Winnipeg's rivers, but seems like those days are past.

Recreational use of the rivers has diminished as well but there still are a fair number of boaters using it for pleasure craft. Something in the lines of a smaller marina of sorts could be a pleasant addition and give boaters another destination other than the forks.

Okay, I know a land value tax isn't going to happen.

But is there not something the city or province could do to make it much less appealing from a tax perspective to hold onto a vacant building?

Like -- after 1 year vacancy, all vacant commercial properties get assessed a surtax.

Just not a marina with a boat dock. I envision a dozen trucks and boats trailers parked in a lot there which doesn't seem all that appealing to most. You know, a dock with a gas pump and a bait shack lol.

If it was just a place to dock boats with a promenade and another riverfront restaurant maybe. Then it would be a boat up destination for the Exchange and not just a place to launch fishing boats.

No no, didn't mean just a place to fuel up or launch/dock your craft, which is still needed, an actual destination for boaters as you mentioned. Somewhere to grab a bite to eat, stretch your legs, have a beer etc,, just need some vision. They could do it right with proper planning and consultation with the public. It's a great opportunity.

Here's hoping. Used the Red and Assiniboine for years before I gave up my boat.

Nothing wrong with more than one destination if your using the waterways in our city. I may launch near the Perimeter and have no interest in the Forks. Having a choice of options rather than just one expands the possibilities for activities, businesses establishments, locations to frequent wouldn't you say? Similar to Corydon, Osborne Village and so on and so on. The more reasons to take advantage of a city built around it's rivers the better.

Don't see a negative in what your trying to say or compare it to.

Totally agree. Why can't we have more than one of something great if it's supported and used. Particularly in this case, it's what this premise of the "go to the waterfront" concept is built on. Using our waterways to fullest capacity.

how about renting canoes and kayaks there? more in keeping with the times than a bunch of loud motorboats..

Yes, I agree, more spots like this on the rivers would be a good thing - don't get me wrong. I'd like to see a spot like this developed along the river near the Assiniboine Park foot bridge too. There used to be a dock by the footbridge, but was destroyed in a flood and never replaced.

We used to have the Point Douglas Yacht Club. I don't think there's anything there now.

The city wants TFNP to merge/evolve into a waterfront development corporation, and spearhead all the city's waterway plans. Essentially sell off North Portage assets and shift focus to the rivers.

the Alexander docks should remain with a marina concept as for a near by boat launch theres one right beside the liouse brdige........................... also if proper space was built to doc ur boat there it would add an amenity to exchange residents to conect to the river better and some would prolly have boats there and u could open up river commuting from st vital and such downtown in the summer
