Warm Springs Plunge- Renovation / Development Proposal

Salt Lake City’s Housing and Neighborhood Development Division, represented by Dan Rip, Real Estate Services, is requesting that the Historic Landmark Commission hold a work session to discuss a concept of reusing the Warm Springs Plunge building, a city-owned Landmark Site.

PROPOSAL:
The proposal includes the renovation of the Landmark Site and construction of a new seven story structure to the east (behind) the Landmark Site. The new building would include two levels of structured parking (207 stalls) and five stories of residential use (125 units). The proposal also includes four townhouses (on the south side of the new building).

The exterior of the Warm Springs Plunge will be repaired
as necessary to maintain its long term viability. Various
work items which will need to be addressed include the
following:

• Stucco will be patched or replaced
• Windows will be repaired or replaced
• Doors will be repaired or replaced
• Upgrade roofing
• Restore skylights
• Stabilize the smokestack
• Repair or replace decorative terra cotta elements
• Repair or replace other decorative features, such as
decorative wood brackets

These elegant row houses use to sit on W. Temple, between 4th and 5th S.


Another West Temple jewel. The combination of the recently demolished Arrow Press building with this gem would have made for a very handsome street presence today.

This photograph was taken for Utah Power and Light Company, which had purchased U.L.&T. Co. the previous year. Probably a lot of you guys are familiar with this website already. If not, check it out. Along with the familiar gems that many of you will recognize, there are also many photos of long since demolished historical structures that you might not have realized even existed. One that surprised me was the very handsome Bamberger Line Depot, that once stood where Abravanel Hall stands today.

I know many of you get angry and discouraged when seeing what has been demolished. This especially when we see what some were replaced with, or that the plot still stands as vacant or blacktop after all of these decades. I like to believe that some of us future development enthusiasts will recreate these historical beauties in the not too distant future. I hope that many of you, who will some day become Salt Lake City's future builders, will not forget to give back to Salt Lake by recreating some of these lost treasures.

[p.153]Interurban Railroad Station on South Temple, June 17, 1933. This building served as the terminal for the Bamberger Line that ran north to Ogden and the Orem Line that ran south to Payson. Greyhound Bus Lines purchased the building in 1947 for use as a bus terminal. Eventually, the building was razed to provide parking space for the new Salt Palace Arena; the site is now occupied by Abravanel Hall. (Neg. 28400.)

Bim Oliver, a local architectural historian specializing in 20th century buildings, has recently published "South Temple Street Landmarks".Unlike previous books on our grand avenue it emphasizes changes since 1920 including the Interurban station pictured above. Forum readers will find that unbuilt proposals, developer woes and zoning battles are not new phenomena.

It was published History Books in early 2017. I happened to see Bim today and he said Kings English, Weller Bookworks, and local Barnes and Nobles carry it as does Amazon. The publisher's link below also lists ebook vendors.

I would love to see this building renovated, but even more so I would like to see this particular Idea be rejects. This land is currently public use and I would really like it to stay that way. There is plenty of space down town and along 300 & 400 west that is prime for residential development. I don't think this is one of those places. There are currently bike trails along the hill side along with a nice park. I don't want to see this disrupted with another one of these POS cookie cutter apartment buildings. I actually would like to see it be restored as a warm springs bath house and have the land around it become an extension of the park and public use.

No private companies should be restoring it at all. The city ought to restore it and make it a public facility again.

Has there been any news on the Bishop Place demolition / redevelopment on the adjacent block? They fenced off the whole area and boarded up all of the houses over a year ago. It's kind of sad that they couldn't just leave the street occupied until they were ready to move on it. I'm also curious about the Hanson service redevelopment.

I would also like to see this area completely demolished and redeveloped... I think some nice 3 story all brick Rowe homes would look really nice along 200 West right there. They could have garages in the rear with access from 200 North.

Yup. This has to be one of the most hackneyed back-patting good ole boy deals in the history of the city and it needs to be stopped. WTF with the random four townhomes duct-taped to the south end of that monstrosity? Its like a retarded thirteen year old with Sketchup huffed glue and dropped his computer in the toilet. Stop this nonsense. I am now convinced that this shitty apartment bubble needs to be popped. It is ruining all available deals in the city across all asset classes. CowboyClearBurySatch all suck and our city only do their bidding.

I don't get it. I don't understand how it could possibly be that difficult to design an attractive building. It can't possibly be that hard. Is this Soviet bathhouse the best they could come up with? I'm sure the sulfur smell from the adjacent springs and the constant noise from the Geneva rock trucks on Beck street will be a nice addition to the property.

Medical device firm to relocate to Salt Lake City, bring 380 jobs

The Salt Lake City Department of Economic Development announced the corporate headquarters relocation for a medical device company to Utah's capital city, bringing with it hundreds of expected jobs over the next eight years.

Biomerics, a medical device maker for the cardiovascular market, is moving its headquarters to the city's northwest quadrant, just west of Salt Lake City International Airport.

The planned 230,000-square-foot facility will include corporate and engineering offices, and research and development labs, as well as cleanroom manufacturing, a news release stated.

“Biomerics has seen incredible growth over the last few years, which has encouraged us to look more strategically at how we do business in Salt Lake City,” company CEO Travis Sessions said. “This new facility will enable us to better serve our customers, expand our current resources and invest in new opportunities.”

Scheduled for completion next year, the headquarters will accommodate up to 600 employees. The project is estimated to be a $38.5 million investment over next eight years, with more than 380 new jobs expected to be added to the company's payroll, according to the statement.

Has the city already sold this land or is it just in the idea stage? They shouldn't come up with any apartment building. The existing building should be resorted to its original use and then they should build an outdoor swimming area behind it. I think a swimming facility would enhance the park and be an asset to the community. You can build an apartment building anywhere (in fact they could build one right across 300 west), but this area around the park is unique.

When I was little it was a children's museum, and I remember how my mom and all the adults told me how they used to go swimming there when they were little, and how much fun it was. When I was a little a lot of families went swimming at the Deseret gym which isn't even there anymore... I think it would be awesome to have a place where families can go swimming and play at the park... It would really enrich the community and preserve a price of its history... there has to be people that we can get in contact with about this.
