No excuse for that. They can get rid of the site trailer as they can set up shop inside one of the retail bays and tool storage can be indoors now as well. They can fence off a portion of the sidewalk that needs to be reconstructed and keep the remainder of the sidewalk open.

It really stands out, even in the Chicago skyline, and I thought wow, I wonder if Stantec will be that tall. Turns out it will be even taller! It's going to be huge!

Council approves ambitious sustainable buildings policy

May 10, 2017
City Council approved an ambitious Sustainable Buildings Policy yesterday. The new standard for energy efficiency set out in the policy is the most ambitious for a major Canadian city with a carbon intensive electricity grid like Edmonton and second only to Vancouver.

“Energy and Climate Change are the top sustainability and resiliency challenges facing Edmonton. We know that 39% of Edmonton’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and 42% of our energy consumption is from buildings,” says Jenny Hong, Senior Project Manager for the Energy Transition Strategy. “It’s important for the City to show leadership in sustainable building practices and this policy does just that. It commits us to build new municipal buildings that are at minimum 40% more energy efficient and emit 40% less greenhouse gases than buildings built to code. It requires a higher quality building envelope that decreases the amount of energy needed to heat the building.”

“Policy C532 makes Edmonton one of the first cities in Canada to improve energy conservation by targeting the quality of the building envelope for new municipal buildings,” says Pascale Ladouceur, Director of Facility Planning and Design. “It encourages designers to use passive design strategies to minimize the consumption of natural gas and electricity. This could include using high quality, well-insulated windows, doors, and walls and optimizing placement of windows to reduce the need for active heating and cooling.”

The Policy also requires a minimum 1% of the project budget to be dedicated to on-site energy generation. This could mean that new City buildings could generate up to 30% of their annual energy needs through an alternative energy system such as solar panels or heat and power cogeneration. Dedicated funding for on-site energy generation will help the City’s achieve its longer term goal of generating 10% of Edmonton's electricity locally.

Policy C532 is one of the many actions that the City is taking to implement the Energy Transition Strategy which moves Edmonton towards the goal of being an energy sustainable city.

City honours community for playing pivotal role in public engagement shift

The City of Edmonton held a special event today to recognize the contributions of community members, and the achievements of the Council Initiative on Public Engagement. The event drew over 200 people, who gathered to celebrate the creation of a renewed framework for public engagement at the City.

“It’s important to acknowledge that the foundation of the Council Initiative’s work was built on more than 1,000 individual voices from across our city in Phase 1 and more than 8,000 hours were contributed by members in Phase 2,” said Kirsten Goa, Community Co-Chair of the Advisory Committee.

A new website, “Engaging Edmonton, ” was revealed at the event, which shares the stories of the Council Initiative’s community member participants. In addition, the City showcased its revamped public engagement site, which will serve as a resource hub of opportunities for citizens to get engaged. The City of Edmonton’s new direction for public engagement was also unveiled, including the new promise and public engagement spectrum that uses more citizen-centric language.

“As a result of the generous contributions, thoughtful thinking and countless hours given by those who participated on the Council Initiative, we have advanced our public engagement practice,” said Rob Klatchuk, Branch Manager of Engagement and Administration Co-Chair of the Advisory Committee.

Launched in 2014 and sponsored by Councillors Ben Henderson, Michael Walters and Andrew Knack, the work of the Council Initiative on Public Engagement contributed to the development of the new public engagement policy and framework approved by Council on April 11.

I did a presentation about SE USA back in grade 7 and Atlanta really made an impact on me. never been but want to go.

I can't put my finger on it, really. I just kept seeing Edmonton in the World Book Encyclopedia and I got intrigued with it. I would write letters to the city's tourism board to get brochures in the mail. I finally visited Edmonton for the first time in 2001. I loved being there, like a dream come true. I've since visited a number of times, and have made friends there as well as have met some of the forumers on here. The last time I was in Edmonton was in May, 2012 with my dear companion, who tragically passed away in December of 2013. I hope I can go again next year when the Ice District towers are mostly complete.

Atlanta is a pretty awesome city, but to me it's just getting too big and congested. I live in a suburb called Marietta. I used to go into Atlanta a lot but don't very often anymore, mainly because of the traffic. I guess that's part of me getting older, LOL. For skyscraper geeks, the coolest thing about the Atlanta area is its several different dense areas, each with a distinct skyline. Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, the northern Perimeter area, and the Cumberland/Galleria area, now home to SunTrust Park, where the Atlanta Braves now play. That's about 20 minutes from where I live.
