Great indeed, but a drop in the bucket for the area. There is a massive amount of blight in the vicinity.

again your under estimating the asset theres several million dallors worth of tools in that space and took a space that was unused dilapitated mes and got it to code and filled it with young and old minds working on ideas around each other bringing a collective expertise from software to buisnes to physical items that is part of a larger vision that involves all of canada

i think theres a broader vision for that area

once the public safety building is demolished and the Manitoba museum and pantages playhouse theatre get expanded this area will look way more vibrant.

90 million dollars is a lot and I imagine this project will be pretty massive in scope considering how small the parking lot is I imagine it will be atleast 10 floors.

I really hope whatever they decide to build on the public safety land creates more desnity and vibrancy in the area.. they need to do what they can to drive the bums and riff raff from that area further north on main..

the problem with downtown is theres so much subsidised housing and homeless shelters that itll be hard to keep lot of the crime and scum out of the area.

One of the problems is nobody works in tandem with each other in Winnipeg. There is never a broad vision.

Never mind a plan for developers and coordinated planning for specific areas, hell city dept.s don't even work in conjunction with each other!

I have to disagree with that to some extent. the collaboration between three levels of government leading to the Forks development is unique in Canada. people have come from many parts of the world to try and figure out the secret sauce there.

if you look at the Yes Winnipeg model and the lean manufacturing stuff going on across small and medium sized companies in Manitoba I would have to say that collaboration towards a common goal is one of our few strengths. to me that is vision.

Nothing secret. Anything can be done with massive amounts of taxpayer money.

Being somewhere between an optimist and realist.....It has been explained to me repeatedly by many that until the homeless shelters and drop in places and so on remain in easy walking distance to all the fabulous developments, not much will change with some of the so called rif raf that have severe addictions and mental issues etc..
Crime and the scary /intimidation element has to be diverted elsewhere since elimination is not realistic.

Not necessarily true. Water street and most of Gas Town is a great urban environment, with so much going for it, and it is literally across the street from the worst urban display of homelessness and active/open drug abuse in Canada. It is amazing how you can go from an abundance of tourists to homelessness with a few steps.

But seriously though, what a huge expansion for RRC's downtown presence.

Keep it coming. The area needs a MacEwan-like presence. Hell, the U of W needs that too. The RRC Campus definitely needs a lot of student housing.

^ RRC has undoubtedly had some spinoff effects in the area, but hardly any of it can be noticed more than about 100m west of Princess Street. It's like there's an invisible red line which can't be crossed.

I realize the main point of RRC's expansion isn't to improve the neighbourhood, but man it would be nice to see at least some sort of revitalization take place in the area between Princess and Isabel as a result of all this activity.
