I've always liked that observation deck, I find that Ferris wheel a bit tacky though. Montreal already has one on it's waterfront not far away 1.61 km to be exact.

/\ It does seem a bit redondant, even though the new one will be right at the foot of Old Montreal, with a vista of downtown, and opened all-year round, and also higher. The view from up there will be impressive, but maybe not as much as the one they're building on the cruise ship's pier. There's a lot of observation spots now for tourists: the Clock Tower, Mount Royal, Olympic stadium, Place Ville-Marie and soon also the top of the St. Joseph's oratory's dome.

I think there will a be a lot a nice pictures taken all around town in the coming years from all these places

There is a webcam of the construction site at the bottom of the opening page on this site.
NNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ferris wheels are tacky and belong at an amusement park or Vegas. This ruins the Montreal skyline. It makes London look like a theme park and it will do the same here.

If Montreal allows it my view of the city will go down a few notches.

It's a done deal; they are building it right now and it will be operational in june. I think you are overreacting though. It's not even half as high as the London Eye.

Not quite I had in mind. It's not much taller than the ferris wheel and it's on the narrow side for someone that not always wants to flirt with the edge. We're seeing a boom in decks on the uppermost level of skyscrapers.

/\ Then wait for the inevitable observaton deck that will be build on top of Silo Number 5. That will be as high as any observation deck could possibly be in the Old Port. It's not like there is or will be skyscrapers there.

Well that seems a bit over dramatic.

However, my posts aren't specific to the Old Port or Montreal for that matter. I've been disappointed by my Ferris Wheel experiences. I found much better urban vistas that didn't cost a dime.

Back to Montreal.

I feel the same with any of the Old Port proposed decks. Now, you do not get the greatest skyline vistas being at the top of a skyscraper in the downtown core but, you do get an experience that a tourist can't find anywhere else.

It's not like it'll be in skyline photos ...it's out of the way really ...i actually love it ! We will be able to view the downtown core ! It's only 60m high so it's pretty "small" compared to other cities with Ferris wheels ...why are some here complaining lol ...it's Montréal ! We have everything

At least the London Eye looks unique. It also makes sense in London where there are few places for tourists to have a birds eys view of that city. The Montreal proposal seems a little ridundant.

The wheel is an old idea being recycled yet again in order to attract more foreign capital. I'm not particularly excited, nor against it. But hey, private developers want to invest money here and help boost the old port's activity year-round. Let them have at it. I suspect not many locals will ever go, at least not more than once. As such, it will not become a huge landmark. It certainly won't redefine the city or become internationally famous like the london eye.

As for its (possible / debatable) impact on the skyline. Who cares, it will be just one more element in an already dense and multi-layered cityscape.

The Ford brothers proposed one for the Portlands, along with a monorail, with the private funding to make it happen. They were laughed at by council and the general population and eventually cancelled their plans. Not saying it was a bad idea, but you're being quite presumptuous about people's intentions. It's kind of like the downtown casino idea, I'm all for it, but I recognize that people in these parts are against that sort of thing.

Anyway, I genuinely hope it works out for Montreal. Ferris wheels can be a good addition, it's all in the execution.
