Someone was asking about the new banana boat building in the restaurant thread.

Not a very handsome building but the storefronts look good. It's exactly the kind of cheap mixed-use infill we should be seeing everywhere in this city. Notice how the back of the building offers direct access to the upstairs suites.

The lower half actually looks quite good, it's the barn on top that ruins it. Would it have been that difficult and expensive to use the same material on the whole building, or even just put a finishing touch at the top?

I wonder if some of the suites were taken in advance, as it's odd that one window up top is different.

Meh... this design would be fine if it was in an industrial park, not for Osborne. I do agree the external access is nice!

And cheap! Like I said, this building doesn't look good, but it looks better than any strip mall in the city, and we'd be a much better city if people realized how affordably they could do mixed-use. We could honestly use 100 more of these in this city long before we could use 1 better looking iteration of this building.

Agreed. No question it's a homely building, but the benefits of the built form outweighs any harm from the so-so appearance.

Apperance only gets you so far... there are plenty of ugly buildings in mind blowing urban environments, while there are also lots of nice, high quality, well finished strip malls in places like Grand Forks and Brandon.

Thanks! that was me. Yeah agree with most here that bottom is okay, top is disgusting - like the access for each unit and agree overall that more of these are at least a step in the right direction.

This was the image posted on the facebook event page and the one i suspected was incorrect - no idea what this is supposed to be then?

Could be wrong, but I think that was the original render for the replacement building. Obviously some details have changed since then

I kind of like it. It could become a unique local style that would be homely, yet beloved.

from the back, it looks like it could be used as a fill-in on a movie set for a cheap motel along interstate 5!

I think it looks fine...almost like a modern day warehouse converted into mixed use. It'll be interesting to see what the signage looks like, that could make a huge difference

agreed! we need more low rental retail if we can make it work for the developers cause why would u if ur not guna make healthy roi

Well, at least things are moving in a positive direction?

I can tell you that many global cities are filled with wholly unimpressive and unspectacular buildings... yet put them all together, and they add up to an incredible urban environment.
