^Hey, Mont Tremblant has a pretty respectable 645m elevation difference between base and summit. Sure it's not the Rockies, but it's pretty reasonable.

Lol!!!

Most of last season was mosquito free here except when we got a bunch of rain in August. I went camping in Dinosaur provincial park and the swarms of them were biblical. I remember getting out of my car at one point to go for a hike. When I hit the grass 10 feet from my car I thought I was being pricked by speargrass. The mosquitoes acted like a second pair of pants.

Mosquitoes are pansies compared to black flies.

Mosquitos are to blackflies what bumble bees are to those 5 inch long wasps from Japan.

Spruce bug bites are pretty fucking nasty too. According to the internet they're called Spruce Sawyers elsewhere. They make a clacking sound when they fly and I am pretty sure they're the largest insects in this part of the country. A spruce bug bite is like someone taking toe nail clippers and ripping a piece of your arm off with them.

Horse flies are the super predator fly. Fast, resilient and persistent. They just don't give up.

Black flies are an important part of the Canadian identity, eh. It is also one which indisputably ties the identity of Newfoundland to Canada.

As soon as I started the video, I knew it had to be somewhere close to home!!! And it is VERY close to where I live!

It is not in "Cottage Country" but near Timmins in the wilderness. No cottages or camps on that lake.

Horseflies are killer. Stay away from water and you're pretty much save from them. There's no shelter in black fly season.

Those things are cool. I had no idea they could bite you. I've picked some up before as a kid.

Dinosaur provincial park is beautiful...but it often feels like the land of plagues. Between the heat, the mosquitoes and the snakes it can be awfully...hostile. Even lots of the records from the early days of fossil exploration there mention how bad the bugs are.

I specifically tried to find snakes but couldn't. I did find an empty bullsnake den though with multiple shed skins. The biggest was 6 feet long. I have a picture of me holding it and it's as long as I am tall (I'm 6'1"). I've been twice and haven't seen so much as a garter snake. I used to catch those near Drumheller as a kid. I'd love to see a rattlesnake some day.
