I love how in the rendering, the cars are going the wrong way.

I know it's completely irrelevant to the matter at hand, but I just thought it was funny.

Seriously though, this is great news!

How do you know where they are going?

Sorry, I was just using a Planes Trains and Automobiles joke.

Must be renderings from Hong Kong.

haha awesome. In one rendering they're driving on the right side. In the other, they're driving on the left. But yes, they are 100% from China renderings. Ray Wan special.

I think the renderings were based on opening P&M, thus it has become a free for all...

An example of the chaos that will follow once P&M is opened to pedestrians?

I hope so, but I have my doubts. Although it's a primitive measure, we would have seen something by now if they were interested. They don't seem to be as slick an operation as TNS, Artis, or Richardson, and 201 isn't at the calibre of its competitors.

They have more vacancies, and contrary to the trend Artis and TNS especially are trying to push, they're offering low rents to fill spaces. Factor that in with the absurdly high purchase price, I'm not sure they're in the position they thought they'd be in. I think they bought 201 with intention to build in the lot to the north, but their metrics aren't as pretty.

That said, they're a private corporation, so they can do what they want.

I actually think the optics for a grocery store here are quite good. If we're going to have one full-service downtown grocer (for now), this is probably the most viable spot. Right beside the Exchange, connected to the skywalk, close to lots of office buildings, new residential, not too far from the east side of Bro-🞵🞵🞵, and close to the future residential at The Forks (it will probably be 10 years before one is viable there).

I think a Loblaw City Market would be perfect here.

So there are now 3 major downtown developments talking about some kind of grocery store? Obviously it would be unlikely to see a grocery store at True North, Skycity and 300 Main. Which development will be able to pull it off, I wonder?

Because 300 Main will be the first major residential building to rise, I wonder if this location is most likely? Portage and Main would be fairly handy to residents of the Exchange too, I would think.

I am thinking it would kill SkyCity's plan, or plan to plan since nothing they announce happens...

First grocery store to open is all we'll get, IMO. I'm still not convinced that a full-line, full-size supermarket is even viable yet. It worked at Eaton's and The Bay because they had the extra space in their own building... it becomes dicier once you factor leased space into the equation. And the downtown population, while substantial, is still pretty spread out... I doubt many of the people living behind Portage Place would be walking over to Winnipeg Square for groceries, for example.

I think something like the Carrefour City locations you see in some European cities is a more realistic model for downtown Winnipeg. A good selection of basic grocery items and convenience foods. Sort of like Family Foods on Donald but with some style.

Spar, Tesco, those I wouldn't mind eithe. I'mguessing that none of these have north America as expansion destination.

I'm not saying it necessarily has to be that brand, it's more the idea really. Basically a convenience store on steroids.

We already have some of those style shops in Winnipeg - just need to get them downtown. Thinking GJ Andrews on Academy - fresh produce, breads, prepared meal takeout, fancy imported stuff and wine. Sprinkle a few of those around and you're good.

While Andrews is a wonderful store, it is extremely pricey and would not likely work in a poor neighbourhood like downtown.

Works pretty good on Academy though.

Who do you think is buying those condos? The Exchange has one of the highest incomes in the city.

I think the operator would look at median income, and the median income of downtown is not so great, but who knows...
