Students propose designs for U of S architecture school

PHIL TANK, SASKATOON STARPHOENIX
Published on: February 16, 2017 | Last Updated: February 16, 2017 5:21 PM CST

Saskatoon got its first glimpse Thursday of what a new school of architecture at the University of Saskatchewan might look like.

Undergraduate architecture students from Ryerson University in Toronto produced speculative designs for the John Deere Plow Co. building. It’s expected to one day house a new U of S school of architecture and visual arts, if it gets approval.

The project came about through Colin Ripley, project director for the U of S architecture school, who also teaches architecture full-time at Ryerson.

Nine examples of his students’ work were unveiled Thursday at a reception and exhibit at the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery on the U of S campus.

“They were asked to think about what the world’s going to be like in the future,” Ripley said in an interview. “I think designing an architectural school is not (an assignment) that’s often done.”

Students were asked to think 20 to 30 years in the future, Ripley explained, since a degree in architecture takes close to a decade to complete and another 10 years can pass before working architects occupy a senior, decision-making role.

Ripley said he was impressed with the “really high calibre” of the work, adding he would feel comfortable moving forward with a couple of the designs.

The architecture school is moving through a long series of committee approvals at the U of S, Ripley said. He is writing the school’s academic program.

The earliest estimate of when the school could open if all approvals go smoothly would be 2018, he said.

“I’m generally optimistic,” Ripley said. “(The John Deere building) needs to be essentially gutted and completely renovated for that to happen.”

The City of Saskatoon donated the 107-year-old former warehouse to the U of S specifically to adapt for the architecture school.

A year ago, the cost of renovating the building was estimated at $18 million.

Cooper: Downtown arena and better transit go hand in hand

By Jordon Cooper, Saskatoon StarPhoenix
February 21, 2017

There were reports that Saskatoon officials were in Edmonton to check out Rogers Place recently. It’s all part of the process of keeping momentum going towards a new downtown arena for the Saskatchewan Rush and the Saskatoon Blades.

I am a big fan of the project for several reasons. The main reason is that for a city to go from good to great, it’s just not incremental steps that get the job done. There are some bold risks that need to be taken along the way. A new downtown arena could certainly be considered one.

It isn’t the only risk that we need to take. Stadiums get all of the glory but the longer lasting impact is the investments in transit and infrastructure. It is one thing to build a world class venue in downtown Saskatoon, but how are we going to get 16,000-plus fans down there and back home 100 times a year? Demolishing more of our downtown for surface parking doesn’t seem like the best of all ideas.

Before the plans are drawn up for a new downtown arena, Saskatoon needs a firm plan for implementing a bus rapid transit system. The success of the arena, the teams that play there and the downtown will be determined not by winning teams but by how easy it will be for people to get down there and back home again afterwards.

Tank: More than location matters for downtown arena

By Phil Tank, Saskatoon StarPhoenix
February 21, 2017

The cliché about real estate suggests that only location matters, but size and price ultimately prove important factors, too.

Last week, the brain trust behind Saskatoon’s SaskTel Centre arena and entertainment facility journeyed to Edmonton to size up the competition: Rogers Place, which opened in September.

The SaskTel Centre crew likely checked out the amenities and infrastructure at Rogers Place as a report on the future of the 29-year-old suburban Saskatoon arena looms later this year.

So... Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve the entrance/exit points out of the Sasktel Centre? Because I don't get why it takes so long to get in/out when you have an arena that was basically built in the middle of nowhere with nothing else around it.

And why hasn't the city done anything in the last 30 years to fix the problem? It was bad for Blades games when they had good owners. It's even worse with the Rush and any concerts or decently attended event.

Short Term:

Close access from 60th street to Southbound Idylwyld. Then make patrons use Marquis to go either north highway 11 (Warman Martenville Crowd) or east down marquis (Saskatoon East Crowd) and close the SB Marquis Idylwyld ramp.

Police should then only let drivers whom are Southbound on 11 east along Marquis to Warman. For 45-60 minutes after the end of the event.

Anyone using the South Marquis to Highway 16 would then not run into a mass of traffic heading south on highway 11 alleviating the rush on Circle and Idylwyld. They would also have access to Beam Rd to access the west side of Saskatoon, or go west along 16 to Dalmany Access and go south.

Long Term:

The new North bridge will significantly help the situation as those headed to east end will likely use Marquis and not head south to Circle and that cluster**** of an interchange.

Upgrade beam road to a 2-lane PAVED access to Dalmany Rd so that more people would take it.

Building an interchange at Marquis and Highway 11 and Marquis and 16 (Both quite very much needed, not only for events, but for trucks / commuting)

you said it. if we did have the marquis/hwy#16 interchange, and some arterial/bypass could be connected to dalmeny road somehow. thats my opinion.

its hard to incorporate something this late...costs, scheduling conflicts, etc..

i just park at tim hortons/hotel 6 or whatever it is, and walk to the stadium. even after events its a good 10min walk, but driving out of tim hortons onto marquis then on to idylwild is less than 5 minutes all the time.

id love to see something happen, but doubt anything will. the best will be the interchange at hwy#16/marquis whenever that does happen.

The longer term solution is building a new area and having a dedicated BRT (future LRT) station next to it. Downtown would be a great place. But the paradigm shift to mass transit will take some time.

I believe that with the new Mosaic where it is, and with the free transit people in Regina will resign themselves to the end that parking is no longer as "available as it was" and start using it. Which IMO is the idea of the design to force people to disdain the use of their cars to get to and fro.

The 3rd floor of the building across 19th St from the Banks is framed up. The scale of the building and placement on the lot, along with the Banks across the street, is enough to give that intersection a much more urban condition (an intersection in Saskatoon getting more urban, not less?!?!). However, I fear that with the finishes and details for this building, it'll still be a stinker.

Here's a shot of the hotel going up by the university from a few weeks ago

There's also a crane up at the site of the Collaborative Science Research building that's going in between the Ag and Bio buildings it looked like they were working on piles for thee structure. They had taken part of the bridge that linked the Ag and Bio buildings so they would have room to work.

Is there anyway to scale that image down without downloading it shrinking it and then re-uploading it? it's a bit annoying having it so huge

Pic? I didn't know they were building something in between Ag & Bio - interested to see what it is/will look like. I can't find anything describing this project on the UofS Facilities website.

Between the hotel, science building, and children's hospital there's a ton of construction on campus.
