The insect control branch is slated to be abandoned at its current location off Nairn as part of the eastern transitway project. If it goes through that area of course. It will be located somewhere outside/near the Perimeter.

So using it as a back-up will only last for the next 5-10 years. Again, assuming the eastern transitway goes ahead, which I think it will.

That said the proximity of Seven Oaks to St Andrews Airport could be a negative (or a positive) as that + an ambulance could be used as an alternate site.
The Seven Oaks helicopter pad was on the ground, not the rooftop.

So the shake down of residents in Old Kildonan with the City of Winnipeg playing the heavy for Genstar seems to have been resolved. Guess all the negative publicity for Genstar was too much for the syndicate!

excerpt from the Sun;

"A group of Old Kildonan residents has been cleared from paying massive bills for city services they didn’t order.

A development claim related to Amber Gates could have cost the owner of each affected home on south Templeton Avenue between $76,000 and $361,000. But Devi Sharma, the ward’s councillor, revealed Monday afternoon that Genstar Development Company has now withdrawn its local improvement application, effectively removing those fees."

Some good news...

The Roslyn condo building proposed a couple of years ago behind the Safeway finally appears ready to start. 7 storeys - 77 units.

Cue the confetti!

This one was publicly proposed in 2009 as I recall. Man, some of these projects take forever to come to fruition.

Is there really no thread for the UFO (aka 62M)?

Here's a CBC story about it... that glass box on top is awesome. Admittedly not the greatest location in the universe in terms of amenities at your door, but it sure looks interesting.

So they won't get any upgrades either by the sounds of it. They'll live on their properties in the current form, article notes. They'll face similar fees in the future if they wish to subdivide or get services.

Is this the one that residents argue doesn't fit the nieghbourhood? Except for the fact that there are some 30+ storey towers right there.

Most of the opposition from the community was to them tearing down two grand old houses on the site. I believe it was simple economics that held the project up. The original, taller, football shaped condo tower wasn't able to make enough money.

Quite interesting. Open air corridors. Sasa owns a penthouse suite and the top glass box.

I was wondering if that place was stalled or something. Didn't seem to be much action or lights in there. But looks like everything's going ahead. Right on!

^ That photo #5 looks exactly how I would imagine a prison courtyard would look. Yikes.

The open air courtyard is certainly different, but I bet will be a bit annoying for tenants over the long term. I get that you are saving on a reduction in shared, heat and conditioned space - but in the dead of winter, or when the mosquitoes are buzzing - that journey up and down from your car to your door is gonna get annoying.

Plus now you have two exterior walls instead of 1, making your heating bills higher anyway. Not to mention the open floor below the first level... Brrrrr.

I was thinking the same. Cold floor on the bottom level. How do tenatnts actually access the courtyard. Is there an elevator inside the core? Or are they below the 4 storey max?

^ I would hope for the tenants' sake there is an elevator... I wouldn't be thrilled about having to lug groceries, furniture, etc. up multiple flights of stairs.

No elevator. If there was there would be an elevator shack on top instead of that glass box thing.

There is certainly an elevator. You'll notice a lot of concrete sticking up above the roof level before the glass box. Elevator 'cab' is in there.

The suites don't take much to heat. The 'second' exterior wall is only 7'-0" wide as the units are pie shaped. Soffit is well insulated with a heated airspace - no cold feet here. Mosquitos aren't much of a concern downtown at that height. Only a few seconds of cold from the elevator to your front door in the winter. The daylight corridor (and mechanical savings) are worth it. Nothing beats fresh air.

took a stroll through "china town" today. noticed they replaced all the Asian-themed streetscaping lights with those found on corydon minus the planter hooks. the old lights were in rough shape, but they at least gave the area a bit of an identity..
