We've talked about this in here before about naming the plaza outside the events centre after Ian Fowler. Ian Fowler Square. Maritime Break & Clutch Arena.

There was an update on CTV News Atlantic this evening. I'm sure you can access this on line.

There's not much really new to talk about. The building envelope is complete, so all current construction is internal and as such not available for view. As such, there's really not too much to photograph on the exterior at present.

Hopefully the next city update on their website will be soon.

I agree. It reminds me of the view you used to have of the federal buildings from the second floor of the old Eaton's department store. It makes the city seem large.

I don't know what it is, but every time I see a photo of the arena bowl within the new events centre, it seems small to me. I realize the seating capacity will be 25% greater in the new arena verses the old coliseum but it certainly doesn't look that way. It must be an optical illusion of some form.........

I agree with you on how it looks smaller. I'm guessing it has to do with the Camera being used, and the direction the photo's seem to be taken from.

It looks almost like someone was taking pictures, and trying not to get caught.

I've had that same feeling almost since the first views of the bowl started coming out. There just doesn't look like there's enough rows of seating for the space. I've been thinking of posting just that for awhile now, and was trying to decide how I wanted to say it.

The ice surface itself is more or less a constant size for arenas around the world; but the photos do seem to make it seem smaller than usual.

Coliseum has 15 rows from ice surface to top row, New Events Centre has 30. Of course, New Centre has no upper bowl. And, we will all have more leg room and wider seats!!!

Good side-by-side comparison shot.

I think there may be several reasons why the new arena may "feel" smaller:

1) - the half upper bowl in the Coliseum makes it seem larger than it is.
2) - in the Coliseum, the concourse is along the top of the lower bowl. In the events centre, the concourse is underneath the seating area, thus giving a less airy and expansive feeling to the building.
3) - I have a strong suspicion that the "pitch" (or incline) of the seating is steeper in the new events centre, thus making the space feel tighter than the Coliseum. Of course, a steep pitch also means that everyone sits closer to the ice surface........

You're correct though, the actual seats in the new events centre will be considerably larger than in the old coliseum.

I thought it looked big considering the size of that cement truck compared to everything around it. The height inside is what really impresses me.

Apologies if this has been discusssed before, but is there a reason or story why the city has never sold naming rights to the Coliseum/Agrena? They've had multiple naming rights even on the 4-plex, but why not the Coliseum?

This is an unusual design for an arena in the 7-10k seat range. Typically you'll have the upper and lower level setup with suites located under the nosebleeds (for example London ON and Everett WA). I find the two-level design makes an arena look larger than it actually is, and vice-versa for the single-bowl designs.

The north, south and west sides of the new arena are actually larger in terms of seat rows than the lower bowl of the Bell Centre. I agree that it doesn't look imposing at first glance, but once you get the seats installed it'll look a lot bigger.

What I really like, is that it looks like the first row will be elevated nearly 3 feet above ice level once the floor and ice surface are installed. I've been in arenas like that (Victoriaville, Val d'Or and Truro's new rink are nearby examples) and it makes a really big difference with sight lines; you don't have to sit nearly as far back to be able to watch the play develop.

If you want a good idea of what the arena will look like with seats, take a look at WFCU Centre in Windsor. It's a single-bowl design, low steel and high steel are almost exactly the same height as here. Behind one of the nets at WFCU are 28-row sections, almost exactly the same scale as ours except we'll have it on 3 sides instead of 1 (they have a 6,500 capacity compared to our 8,500).

After looking up the WFCU centre, I can see that both are very similar. Even the outside has similar shape etc. I give them credit here in Moncton for not going with a suburban style like the one in Windsor, but by looking at the inside of that arena, you get an idea how big they are.
Also the city released a ton of new images on Facebook today of the inside progress.

St. John's IceCaps Hockey Club

This is an image of Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland (Completed 2001). It seats 6,287 for hockey. It's a downtown venue with an enclosed concourse just like here in Moncton. It's amenities include a pub (with patio when the weather permits) on the concourse level and a full service restaurant located on the luxury suite level.

Big differences here in Moncton other than roughly +2,000 seats are club seats and associated club/lounge bar and the fact that the 15 or so luxury boxes in Moncton are stacked in, I think, 2 levels on the East side (Highfield Street) of the building (see Philips Arena and Ford Field for this design strategy - albeit on a smaller scale), rather than ringing the entire top of the arena bowl as is common in many arena designs like St. John's.

Sorry for the above period - couldn't figure out how to delete the first attempt at this post.

Thanks for your input and welcome to the forums. Always good to see new faces around here.

Don't worry about the double post. Happens all the time.

I believe the club lounge at the new events centre will have full food service as well. I think there is supposed to be about 15 concessions around the concourse level, but no pub AFAIK. That would be a good addition though.......

The seats and the finished ceiling will certainly make a difference in how the Moncton centre will look. Just comparing with the Saint John's centre, it certainly looks like Moncton's seats are on a steeper incline; that's probably why it looks so much smaller compared to what we're used to. But it also means that everyone, even the nosebleed seats, will feel closer to the action, which should make for a more intimate experience. Concert promoters will probably really like that when they start marketing it.

I don't know about an actual pub at the events centre in Moncton, but they are looking for a craft beer brewer to sell beer there. Whether that's in a pub or from mobile carts or from a beer stand in the hall or from the restaurants, I dunno.
