True...surprised myself. Haven't heard squat about this in a long time and then this.

It looks like an Australian city (in a great way). Is this proposal not to be believed?

I think the building looks great other than that fin at the top.. which I think is just a weird lighting perception and not actually part of the building?

It is extremely ambitious, but the fact that it is residential and hotel and not commercial makes it doable.

Toronto developer moving ahead with downtown Edmonton luxury high rise
http://edmontonjournal.com/business/real...-with-downtown-edmonton-luxury-high-rise

Quote:
Toronto developer Brad Lamb says Alberta’s economy is on the mend and he’s moving ahead this year with two downtown Edmonton residential towers.

Construction will start this summer or fall on Jasper House, a 37-storey luxury building slated for what has been parking lots along 106 Street north of Jasper Avenue, the president and owner of Lamb Development Corp. says.

“The environment in Alberta has not been kind to real estate developers of any kind in the last two years, but it’s changing,” he says.

“It’s not clear sailing in Alberta, but it’s way better than it was.”

He expects the 240-unit tower will be completed in about 2020, a year later than originally planned because of the energy industry downturn.

One- to three-bedroom condos are being advertised starting at $285,900.

Meanwhile, a public meeting is scheduled Wednesday to discuss rezoning the property next door for Lamb’s approximately 40-storey, 320-unit North Tower, although with a dozen projects across Canada in the pipeline he likely won’t start marketing it until 2018.

He estimates rezoning work will cost $1.5 million, but will boost the land value. He hasn’t decided if the tower will have rental apartments or condos, which aren’t selling as quickly as they were a few years ago.

Still, he has faith in the provincial capital’s future.

“I have lived through three bad real estate recessions in Canada … What I have learned is that they end, and when they end, real estate prices rise above what they were when it started, so I’m a big believer in Edmonton,” says Lamb, who got a realtor’s licence in 1988.

“Long term, it’s my intention to remain … I clearly see this (downturn) as going to end soon. I look at oil at $50-$55 a barrel, and I think it’s actually over.”

He would have to give back deposits if he didn't plan to start eventually ... That being said, Calgary's did get out of the ground eventually. He is notorious for delays in Toronto and seems to be replicating that pattern.

^ We'll see. Developers will never say what's really going on and Gordon Kent is less a reporter and more a shill/ propagandist so this ain't legitimate news. Market is down on anything luxury and that's generously a "C" location for something like that.

We'll see

I like the curvature and sleekness of it. By the initial rendering I think it will be clear glazing.

While I do not question Aldritt's financial capacity to pull this off, regardless it has to make 'economic' sense to justify the investment. Given the scale of the project I question whether the market is there to support it. Place me in the "Prove me wrong category" just like I have with the Edmontonian proposal.

while i am not party to aldritt's financial capacity, i am quite familiar with the outside doubt regarding qualico's ability to pull off epcor tower...

as for whether the market is there, this proposal is much like others already under construction. there might not be a market deep enough for an office tower of stantec's height or a hotel the height of j.w.marriott but in combination with the residential components - and with the synergy those other components provide - this one seems achievable to me...

as for the edmontonian, the issue isn't one of height or even combining uses in order to reach it. i think the issue for the edmontonian is simply a site that is too small to provide the core services and site services needed in order to be able to combine those uses (i.e. lobbies, exit stairs, elevator cores, mechanical shafts, loading etc.). that's not to say there won't be similar issues for aldritt to solve, just that the space needed to solve them is actually available.

^ hopefully the new Hyatt does really well in the quarters, might go a long way to helping Aldritt secure a hotelier and financing for their tower...
