Balgonie to Regina has always needed that upgrade but the rest of the bypass is a waste of money. They could have tied back into the #1 east of Wascana Parkway and upgraded the South Albert intersection instead.

I'm still flabbergasted at how far south the bypass is from the city.

In 20 years I'll won't own a car and I'll be booking trips in driverless cars. And I sure as hell won't care about the bypass.

His point is that self-driving cars won't require the same infrastructure as human-driven cars. And self-driving cars are going to dominate the road in 20 years. It's quite possible that people may not even own individual cars in 20-40 years.

This is something that's debated pretty heavily in the auto and insurance industries. And generally the thoughts are that it's unlikely to happen within 20 years.

The average auto fleet age in Saskatchewan is older than 10 years, so there will be a 10+ year lag from when self-driving vehicles start to outnumber manual in the general population from when the sales in a particular year start to creep ahead. It will likely be at least in the 30+ year timespan where the population of vehicles hits a tipping point and further down from when they truly "dominate".

But again... It's all pretty debatable.

I think this is based on the idea that people will buy their own. I think it is much more likely that there will a fleet of them running in ways more analogous to on-demand public transport.

Self driving cars or no, over the next 30 years we as a community will spend 2 billion plus so that cars and trucks and the people and their wallets in them don't have to come to our community, but can instead smoothly sail by this bump on the prairie. For the the same money we could have addressed EVERYTHING on the City's infrastructure deficit list 1.5X over. Instead of having everything new, we have a massive new addition to that infrastructure deficit list that does literally nothing for our community. Yaaaa! Man I long for the time when conservatives were actually conservative...

Whether or not people buy their own, there will still be the slow gradual shift from the days of people buying their own cars to not. There will still be a fairly large number of people who will want to buy their own regardless. As an example, the most popular vehicles in Saskatchewan are trucks, people who own large trucks aren't the prime "on-demand" public transit users; it's the small/eco-car group that would be the most likely to shift, which is not a huge cohort here.

It's really the taxi industry that will implode much much more quickly than the general car-owning population.

Something had to be done to get the semi traffic off Vic East. We can debate all day whether this was the ideal solution, but we're past that. The city is already planning development up against the bypass on the east side. (Cue complaints from residents about traffic similar to the Pinkie Road gripes when that happens.)

Whats the deal with that house that showed up between the Creeks and the Bypass right off Arcola / 33. It just seemed to pop up overnight. I assume its driveway will be onto Arcola?

It seems like a strange location for one house to go.

There is a chunk of land between Chuka Creek and the interchange. It could be someone whose home was expropriated for the Bypass and is now rebuilding. I wonder if it will be a right turns only drive or if there is a new intersection going in to service Greens on Gardiner east of the Creek. There is no service road indicated.

http://www.regina.ca/residents/city-plan...ast-regina-neighbourhood-plan/index.html

Note: That land is in the RM, while the land north of 33 is in the City.

We've had a lot of major projects in the past few years in the City. Clearly things have slowed, but what new major (>$20 million) projects might get started in 2017?

Here are a few possibilities:

Office: Conexus Building; Brandt Building;

Institutional: New Building at U of R?; Schools? (Doubtful after last years flurry).

Recreation: Can't think of any - maybe Brandt Centre upgrade for Memorial Cup?

Industrial: Line 3 replacement.

Residential: Namerind Twin Towers; Eden Care on Broad.

Hotel: ALT?

Retail: Acre 21; Aurora including Costco; Horizons; Cornwall Centre 11th Ave re-do.

The first 2 are already started so I did not include, but something could happen at the Railyards, but I would not hold my breath.

The chances of anything happening on the rail lands in 2017 are zero.

2018 is certainly a possibility though.

What about the airport expansion? Or is that slated for 2018?
