I think we will hear something on the CCH in Early February around OR Winter Show.

For the next to break ground, I am tossed between Regent Hotel and 151. The AC has broken ground but it is only 10 Stories so wouldn't really count.

I think it would be nice to have all 3 under construction in 2017. This would be 3 large tower cranes all within 2 blocks.

On that note Makid. I've always enjoyed a building under construction and topped out at the steel framing part almost more then I do the new building being finished off. The cranes and the steel gurters seem to give off a confirmation of a vibrant city. A lame post, I know. But I would look forward to all that activity

We went to see Hedwig at the Eccles last week and thoroughly loved the place, although, it doesn't have the charm of the older theatres.

Haven't you guys kept saying, "the next OR Show I think they'll announce something about the convention hotel", for at least the past 3-4 years and nothing has been announced?

Again this will probably never get built knowing Salt Lake City and Utah politics. They'll take five years to do a study on this hotel to see if it will bother local birds, specifically the Seagull, as well if it will block the views of other high rises. Only to announce they're not building it.

There is normal time, then there is Utah time which goes at a much slower pace.

As much as I don't want to, but sadly there's truth to this post. Everything in SLC takes too 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 long. There has been a lot of screwing around these last three years or so now with the CCH. It shouldn't take this long.

It's almost like we're somewhere between the Amish and everywhere else.

There are many facets to The Wasatch Metros growth. In some ways Salt Lake City and it's greater metro hits waaay above it's weight class. In other ways it follows a pattern that is average.

The greater Denver Metro area was at over 3 million when it completed it's on-premises Convention Center Hotel. Phoenix was at over 4 million. Also, both respective States had millions more in population at the State level. Many of the same sized metros or smaller than SLC don't have nearly as many hotel rooms within the confines of their downtown area, not to mention the addition of adj. areas such as Park City/Deer Valley. Nor do they have hotel accomadations that are even in the same Universe of opulence and overall room numbers as Holding's America properties. In spite of the fact that Salt Lake has more hotel rooms within a close radius than many same size or larger cities, we'll get the CCH, and to say it will never happen is utter bull 🞵🞵🞵🞵. Just like it was pure bull 🞵🞵🞵🞵 to claim that Salt Lake would never get a multi-billion dollar retail center at its heart, a multi-billion dollar airport expansion, or even build a world class Broadway-centric theatre, and on and on. Sometimes it seems as if the paint isn't even dry on all of these many projects before the chorus starts about how we'll never get started on that next project. As soon as the CCH is announced and construction begins, there will be those whose thrill will wear thin within months. They will then fixate on some other proposal, and claim that it will never happen.

You obviously don't live in Utah... is there a particular reason that you are concerning yourself with this issue?

To be fair, I'm sure that we'll get the CCH sooner or later, especially since the Legislature signed off with the state to join with the city and county on tax breaks.
I should have clarified that it's more culture than development with the Amish/everywhere statement.
And although I don't get his preoccupation with trolling our thread here, I thought that post was kinda funny.

We would've had a CCH 10-15 years ago if it weren't for Holding & Co. (Clint Ensign) lobbying against one every time the subject comes up.

I used to work in the marketing department at the Grand and sat in on strategy meetings discussing how to fight a proposed 1,000-room hotel that was seriously being considered back in 2003 on APS.

I've been thinking for a while that SLC RDA ought to develop one or more urban business parks in SLC proper to attract high tech companies with RDA funds used to keep rents closer to suburban rates at least for the first 10-15 years. That would do a lot to attract high tech business. I was thinking about these two locations:

The "Slopes" don't need to be strictly Lehi and Draper, they can just as easily be Salt Lake City proper. One note on this though Twitter moved to Market St in San Fran, basically making that neighborhood an "Innovation District" and Boston already had a few companies clustering, and then designated it an "Innovation District." Don't get me wrong though, I do like the overall concept. Do I think SLC can overtake Lehi? Probably not, but it can make some in roads. The launch of Google Fiber in SLC will hopefully help to get a few medium size companies to choose SLC over Lehi, and hopefully that can attract some additional ones.

Fyi, I have been involved in concept plans for this area. I wish I could show you what we've come up with. I hope that SLC will attract some high-tech companies to pioneer re-development in this area.

There's already a lot of tech going on in the old Coca Cola building on West temple, so that would actually make sense

The University of Utah plans to buy a large concrete building just south of downtown Salt Lake City to store the massive amounts of digital data generated by the state's major research, academic and medical complex.

The U. Board of Trustees on April 28 authorized a $4.5 million purchase of the MCI building on West Temple between 800 and 900 South. The 72,285-square-foot building, which is being eyed by another potential buyer, sits on the 3.2-acre lot that once was the site of a Coca-Cola bottling plant.

At that price, the U. would acquire the space at $62 per square foot - significantly less than it would cost to build a new structure on campus, which lacks the electrical capacity to power the facility, according to a report to the state Board of Regents. But the U. plans to invest another $6.4 million retrofitting the building with electrical infrastructure, offices, air conditioning and network connectivity.

The building is a windowless bunker shell, held up by 18-inch reinforced concrete walls. Should the sale go through, University Hospital may use the north end of the building for storage and the Utah System of Higher Education and other state agencies likely would lease data-storage services housed there.

The top five development stories this year. I think we'll see the Regent Street Hotel and 151 start construction in 2017. I think the CCH will start construction early 2018, going through planning/building in 2017. All three projects are still very much alive.

The Toyota dealer just spent a bunch of money building a new dealership on that same block, so I don't see that block re-developing for another 10-15 years.

Well, I was envisioning the process starting on the Sears block and eventually filling all of those blocks.
