I've been wondering why Those areas don't have more interest from big hotel brands generally. So many of the bigs have boutique/lifestyle concepts that would fit into that scene... you'd think they could look at Liz Lambert's huge success and see how much demand there is. Not that I'm sad that she has that area sewn up, it just seems to a pretty easy play if you're a big.

I too am happy that the local smaller properties have the area "sewn up".
I think it would greatly change the character of South Congress if (or when) larger chains move in. Seems most corporations don't understand they kill the character they want to take advantage of just by being present.

The difference between creators and copiers I guess.

Volvo Cars of Austin has plans to move from 2222/Cameron to the SB Frontage Rd of I35. They've already submitted plans, etc, but are snagged in the bureaucracy that is Austin zoning. Hopes are to have it running in about a year. Source: Volvo dealership.

Speaking of car lots, from what I've been told is that they are building a car vending machine at "the motor mile" in South Austin.

How exciting! I saw one going up in Houston too. Love this company! I bought my car from them this past September! Free car delivery. It was painlessly fantastic.

Interesting to think that two years from now we'll have a new person heading into the District 9 (majority of Downtown) City Council seat. Will this person be a pro-housing advocate? Will they be a huge fan of walkability and encourage such development?

The addition of Zaza will do wonders for the square in my opinion, but think about how much of a difference something (quality) finally being built on that giant surface lot! That's still a pretty horrible part of downtown, though. That huge parking lot the county owns. The Hobby Building and the state garage that do nothing for the street. And then there's the monolithic federal courthouse.

Yeah, totally agree, but in my mind the parking lot goes away, the land that the parking garage is on is repurposed someday, and we build really awesome stuff to block the view of the Hobby Building or it goes away entirely. Perhaps even the Austin Ballet lot is redeveloped.

I'm also considering the buildings behind those immediate blocks - Green Water area, 360, Independent, Seaholm area, library, Bowie, etc....the entire shot shows a lot of progress, in spite of the obvious deficiencies that you mentioned.

The courthouse is definitely a monolith, but at least is mildly interesting looking, compared to the Hobby Building which is pretty awful in just about every way.
