The funicular would make it a lot easier for people to get up and down in that part of the river valley, esp. seniors and children. There's been complaints about how the river valley's not so accessible as people would like. Yes, there's stairs, and quite a few of them in places, including where the new funicular is being built. But many of them are quite long due to the depth of the river valley. Stairs like these fine if you're fit enough and for keeping fit, but
not so good if you're 5 or 85 years old (esp. if in poor health)!
Oh, and this is
not the first funicular Edmonton's had - there was one built in 1908 and it operated until 1913. This was known as the Edmonton Incline Railway. It was then shut down for good after the High Level bridge opened. It was built to carry not only people, but also horses. The location of this thing was a few blocks further west, starting where the Chateau Lacombe Hotel stands today.
Note the church in the background - it still exists to this day as MacDougall United Church. Also notice how short it was!
