BA is among other airlines in selling First class seat but business class soft product and experience. In the end it neither helps nor hinders the overall product.
Pros from a customers point of view:
- Get to sit in a first class seat for business class prices.
- Get bragging rights about flying first class.
Cons from a customers point of view:
- No access to Concorde room in LHR T5.
- No personal concierge on check in or throughout the airport.
- No personal chauffeur service to aircraft in LHR.
- No waiter pre-flight fining dining experience in LHR.
- No first class amenity kit or meal onboard (meal is regular Club World service).
- No dedicated flight attendant for the first class cabin, FA is shared with the rest of the Club World cabin.
- No ability to upgrade to first class seat when upgrading from WT+ to Club World, the first class seats are for paid Club World customers only.
The BA cabin configuration only yields 2 additional seats between the 788 and 789. In this instance BA has a same problem a number of other dream-liner operators, too few 788s compared to 789s. The 788 is the perfect aircraft for this route. There are a number of BA routes that share similar profile.
AC also has the same problem as BA, too few 788s for the route profiles. What I suspect has occurred is that Boeing has included free upgrades from 788 to 789 as part of their delivery delay and performance compensation. It was the Boeing compensation that pushed AC to upgrade their remaining Dreamliner orders to the larger airframe.
