Unsure, but since we already have the ROTEM(?) cars on the Canada Line, would it not be weird or difficult to change to a different provider?

Technically there is nothing to prevent going with another supplier but operationally you don't want all the employees to have to learn to deal with multiple products.

Probably, the request for proposals will be written such that it's essentially impossible for another company to meet the requirements, so they'll end up going forward with Hyundai again. However, they are required to put it out as a request for proposals that is open to anyone.

You can get into trouble with that for government contracts. They need to be open enough to keep Hyundai honest too.

Come to think of it, given that Protrans will have to maintain them, do they have a role in the procurement process?

I think you should still be able to bring them to the compass office @ Stadium or WCE office @ Waterfront in order to convert them to stored value. There may be other places closer to you, but I don't think so.

You can use them on the bus but if you need to go through a faregate you'll need to pay again.

I'm pretty sure they're paying ProTrans to buy the trains and operate them. They were a JV including Rotem. It would be a liability/contract mess to have some trains owned by ProTrans and some owned by Translink.

I would suspect if they were to buy more cars it would be "C" cars that they do not currently have any of. That would likely have to be Rotem for compatibility.

As for the contract I would think it does not make much difference. There would need to be a change order to the existing contract. It could be for "owner" (Translink) supplied cars or not.

This is explicitly not the case. They will be 40m trains so they don't have to expand the stations yet.

No doubt the provision for buying new A-B trains, and expanding platforms, etc. is all written into the P3 contract. To my knowledge the contract is not publicly available.

But typically when they are Design/Build/Operate type deals, there are extensive details on the operating part, who is responsible for what, etc.

29th is closed. West coast express train 2 cant get through due to a tree down. Not sure if its moving yet. People were stuck on train 2.5 hrs as of 9.30. Reports of 2 hour line up to get on skytrain at king George. Commercial broadway is apparently chaos.

I was in the train that precipitated that emergency at 29th.

Fun times (not really).

And Commercial Broadway was already a mess even before that shut down with nary a single Translink employee in sight to help things along.
(The ones on the trains weren't even sure what the hell was going on).

Nothing like a bit of commuting chaos to start off your week.
And that's before we even got to the downtown bus messes and their inability to drive in the snow.

There was a bus stuck diagonally across 1-1/2 of the uphill lanes on Nanaimo Street between the Skytrain station and Kingsway, as well as a line of 3 or 4 trolley buses between 29th Avenue and Grandview Highway that seemed to be waiting for another trolley to get itself out of a bus stop.

There's a lot of compacted snow/ice on the bus routes in Southeast Vancouver, so IMHO much of the fault can be laid at the feet of the Vancouver Engineering Department for not having gotten them cleared. Or you can chalk it up to nature if it was just too much for Engineering to handle all of it at once.

West fourth between McDonald and Vine was a mess this morning 6:30 trolleys were not making it up the hill. major arterial s & bus routes should be the 1st order of business. The Dunsmuir bike land was plowed but it didn't loolk like the street had been.

Can't really blame Engineering. The temperature only dropped sometime around 2AM - practically everybody said "Alright, nothing to worry about!" and went to bed long before that.

I dunno. The snow is so hard to predict here, and when it goes south it's such a huge mess. You'd think they'd have everyone on call and then have one or two pilot cars out all night checking conditions so they could bring people in if necessary.
