That house was originally John East's of John East Iron Works. I'm sure you've seen that name around town on more than one occasion. If you look in the 5th photo, you can see a manhole cover embedded in the floor.

Defnitely 2nd Ave. The People's Credit Jewelers is where 2nd Nature was. The Canadian Pacific neon is where one of downtown's biggest renovation tragedies happened - the modernization of the Canadian Pacific Building into the Yaeger Fur Building.



I agree with your love for neon. Many cities have created sign regulations in districts that already retain some sense of their 30's - 70's neon signage and encourage them to be maintained as part of their city's heritage regulations. It makes me happy when I see restaurants like the Hollow's and Primal leaving original neon, and creating their own, in the context of a neighbourhood that was once full of neon itself.

As part of the City as a Museum project, Edmonton has repurchased and restored many neon signs that reflect the city's commercial history. They have created an outdoor neon sign museum with them.

Bus barns to begin move in January

The new year will bring a new home for Saskatoon’s buses.

Saskatoon Transit has sent letters to residents in the Caswell Hill neighbourhood telling them Saskatoon Transit buses will be relocating, starting on Jan. 13. The move is expected to take six days, according to the letter.

Saskatoon Transit operations are moving to the new $160-million civic operations centre on Valley Road, just south of the Montgomery neighbourhood.

There is a church on the corner of university and 13th (just off Broadway) that has plans to relocate to the outskirts of town. I believe they have an agreement to sell to a developer who plans to do a mid-rise condo there. I don't know a timeline, or who is developing, but it is something to keep an eye on. Great location in my opinion.

I've heard about that too. Really great location, and those river/downtown views would be hard to beat.

do you guys think we should create a "college quarter" specific thread now that we have the hotel under construction

and in the future the new arenas and possibly more mid rise condos where we could dedicate discussion for any college quarter projects in that thread. thoughts?

Graham Construction took time from building the new Saskatchewan Children's Hospital to bring some joy to kids in the Acute Pediatric Unit at RUH. Not only did they chip in for presents, they made Santa and a helper fly in a big sleigh over the construction and down between it and the hospital.
That truly is a company and it's employees showing the spirit of Christmas and community. Well done!

New mosque to be 'nucleus' for the community

The group in charge of constructing Saskatoon’s first purpose-built mosque wants it to be more than just a place of worship.

For Shamoon Rashid, that means spreading awareness of what the mosque and the Ahmadiyya Muslim community have to offer.

“A mosque is a place of worship for anyone who worships one God,” he said. “A lot of people don’t know that they are welcome to come.”

Rashid, the president of the north chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at in Saskatoon, said the mosque will be a “unique structure” for Saskatoon and the province once it’s completed.

“It’s going to be the centre for the community here in Saskatoon,” Rashid said. “We’ve got classrooms, we’ve got a multi-purpose hall where people can play and also have banquet events, then you’ve got the prayer hall; this would basically be the nucleus for the community.”

Rashid said while the new mosque will be a major centre for the Muslim community, he hopes it would also be an important part of the community at large.

The first floor of the main building is divided into two almost mirror-image halves: one for the men and one for the women, each with a separate entrance. Immediately next to the entrance is a small room with special washing fixtures for ablution — the cleansing of parts of the body before prayer.

Situated in the heart of the building on the first floor is an empty room lined with grey shelves, which Rashid said will house a library of religious books.

A sad list for such a big time city. One downtown building of medium height and bugger all else. Sorry Save on Foods, don't cut it. Talk to me when IKEA build, then I'll be excited about a store.

I kind of have to agree with Dalreg that the "list" is a pretty uninspiring one save for the Riverlanding condo. The Children's Hospital will be a great addition to our province, but since this well into its build stage I would not consider this a "one to watch" in 2017 and the a few of the others are still speculative (i.e. Market Mall condos).

I think until we see a significant turn around in the price of commodities in our Province, it will be a pretty stagnant construction time in Saskatoon. Our city economy is pretty resource driven (unlike the public government based economy of Regina). I am not saying this is right....in fact NOW is probably the best time for developers to take the plunge on projects due to availability of labour and reduced material costs...but just don't see that happening.

Nice to see this moving forward., I am not sure how much progress has been made.

I still do not understand why bedroom communities are not asked to contribute to these interchanges. In the Regina area, Balgonie, White City and Pilot Butte are not contributing to their interchanges either, but Regina is expected to cough up for certain interchanges that are deemed to serve residents. I am not sure what the criteria are.

Is the Province subsidizing sprawl?

Progress on the building at College and Cumberland (January 1, 2017):


Subway appeared to be open today, work continues on the apartments inside. Exterior seems to be mostly complete at this point.

Not a huge fan of haphazard panels as a building cladding. I feel like they'll become dated long before they're due to be replaced.

Overall I'm satisfied with this building, both in appearance and function. Will be curious to see what the apartments look like inside when finished, and what they'll rent or sell for.

There's a banner up on the Subway apartments, above. IIRC they're advertising rent at about ~1100-1300 for bachelor/1bedroom.
