Dozens of urban ash trees on the chopping block

About 150 of the mature trees lining the streets of Saskatoon’s downtown, Riversdale and Broadway areas will be cut down next year and more could be on the chopping block if an infestation of small, green insects can’t be stopped.

Michelle Chartier, the city’s superintendent of urban forestry and pest management, told a council committee on Monday that large numbers of cottony ash psyllids were detected in late 2015 and have been wreaking havoc on the city’s urban forest. The insects, which were first seen in Saskatoon in 2006, target and kill black and marcana ash trees, of which the city has about 5,500.

Trees in sidewalk cutouts in the city’s core are most susceptible to the insects because they grow in relatively stressful environments.

The deaths of these trees has frustrated business owners. Randy Pshebylo, executive director of the Riversdale Business Improvement District, wrote to council’s planning committee asking for the city to take measures to rejuvenate the trees in the area.

“Dead and dying tree canopies do not send a welcoming and inviting signal to those living or visiting the business district,” he wrote.

Trees in the downtown appear to be hardest hit; Chartier estimates that more than 50 will have to be removed there.

“To hear that we’re going to lose that many this year, it’s going to be a hit to our business improvement district areas for sure,” Mayor Charlie Clark told the committee.

If anybody's noticed the number of sick and dying trees in the downtown and Riversdale and Broadway business districts these past couple years (as I have), here's the explanation. Sad news. I hope that the City works swiftly to replant after removal.

Aww that is sad. Our urban forest is one of the best things about the city. Hopefully they find suitable replacements soon!

Loblaws required several years to get SAP fully rolled out. It can be done but it really tricky to deploy it across a massive organisation. If they try to do it on a few stores figure out how to make it work and then apply the lessons learned on the next one it is much more manageable.

What Target did and Sobeys did with Safeway is they tried to work out all the problems on massive organisations. The impact of all the glitches were felt across the entire chain.

Agreed, I shop at this particular Safeway all the time, it has the best organic produce section of all the Safeways in town. Sobey's has poor selection of organic produce.

I was hoping Lawson Mall would try to get first Marshalls and/or Bed Bath & Beyond stores to Saskatoon. Regina has these stores already and since Lawson Mall is more of an epicentre to Saskatoon/Martensville/Warman's population, to have in that location would make cents, lots of them (pardon the pun)

I'm surprise Lawson Mall doesn't try to have Liquor store as a free standing in parking lot inbetween Tim Horton's and Brown's, since its a one stop business for most people drunk driving there and it doesn't have to be attached to main mall. The mall doesn't have a free standing bank with drive-through ATM either, which you would think would be an advantage to the mall and business.

There's a Bed Bath & Beyond going in at the new phase of Preston Crossing (which is going to be even more of a gong show once that phase is complete...) so it would be a little close to have one going in at Lawson as well. I agree that it would be nice to have a new-to-Saskatoon store go in that space rather than another Sobey's and the aforementioned closing of Safeway. Maybe Sobey's will get another liquor store license for a new standalone liquor store by Brown's.

Have there been any rumblings about other tenants in the Meadow's Market area by the new Costco? It would be nice to have another Superstore location, or even better--a Loblaw's City Market .

Superstore are working on plans for a new store in the NE area. aspen ridge location once the commercial develops in that spot. Wont be for a couple years yet. no plans are concrete yet but its in the works.

Not the nicest looking exterior materials, but a definite upgrade from what was there before (looking on Google maps street view).

Good fit for the area. That area has a real industrial revival feel to it.

A good example of what can be accomplished with old industrial building converted to modern uses is Granville Island in Vancouver.

I'd actually guess that that is 2nd Ave, before angle parking went in. Bur I could be wrong.

City administrators are recommending the sale of a Fifth Avenue parking lot with the hope that a developer will erect a new mixed-use building within three years of the deal closing.

In a report to city council, city staff recommend asking $4.135 million for the property, but accepting a lower bid if a buyer can’t be found within 60 days. Any proposal must conform to architectural and development controls, the report notes.

“We want this to be an asset to the downtown,” said Frank Long, the city’s land director.

The city bought the lot, which is bordered to the south by 25th Street East, in 1903. Until recently it was used by police officers working at the old downtown station. It’s now leased to the Saskatoon Health Region, but that deal expires at the end of July.

That house has been on the market for years -- literally, at least 3 years. And they've never dropped the price, which most of the other sadly deluded souls have done.

I think there was some kind of a glossy magazine spread on the renovation a few years ago...
