^ They aren't like Edmonton's pre-modernization U2s which had carpet!

Has anyone on here gotten to ride on the new LRVs? I've seen them once or twice on the tracks but haven't had a chance to hop on one just yet. Curious about people's thoughts and first impressions.

I rode the S200 yesterday for the first time.

I could immediately tell the S200 has more powerful acceleration than both SD160 series 8 or earlier models. This can be cumbersome for pax that are standing and used to the slower acceleration. A few people were losing their footing on leaving the station,

The S200 appeared to be a slightly wider passenger compartment. Much like the difference between the 737 and A320.

The doors appeared to close a lot quicker. At the busier stations of Brentwood, Dalhousie and crowfoot pax were often having to keep the doors open as there was insufficient time for pax egress before the doors closed, leaving little to no time for pax step inside.

The AC is really powerful and very cold inside, a few seniors were putting on their light jackets.

Bench seats are way or comfortable than the series 8 bucket seats.

Overall pleasant experience but it won't result in more people on transit until such time as the S200 is throughout the fleet.

Question forum me, is there still only one train with 4 car consist in operation?

I'm not sure if it was a second train, but I saw a 3-car S200 consist at Banff Trail last Friday

Almost got to ride one of the new mask cars the other day. Saw it pulling out of the station just as I got off the bus. So close!

It looks as though that 4-car consists are not as desperately needed at this time. During afternoon rush hours, I don't think I've ever seen them being overcrowded beyond capacity--not like two years ago. May as well keep all of them as 3-car consists except perhaps after major events like Stamps and Flames games?

I believe the morning rush is a 'peakier peak'.

Looks like the teething issues are continuing for these new LRVs. I rode on one for the first time 2 weeks ago and have to say I agree with others on here who said the lack of handholds around the door are an issue.

Frustrations emerge for Calgary Transit over new LRT cars

Calgary Herald - Oct 28, 2016

The city’s purchase of new LRT cars has gone briefly off the rails following technical headaches, say Calgary Transit officials.
This week, software glitches forced all 10 new Series 9 CTrain cars produced by German transportation giant Siemens to be pulled off the tracks and into the maintenance shop, said Russell Davies, manager of the transit fleet

I would rather have four car consist and 5 minutes apart than have red line trains 3 consist and 3 minutes apart. Moving away from 3 minute separation will improve flow through the 7th ave corridor.

That Calgary Transit has not been taken to task over the Series 9 introduction is the most under reported story of the year. If this had been an airline, the story would be front page news several times.

I also do not see how Calgary Transit can introduce 4 cars per month when its taken them one year to get 11 trains in service.

I'm and airplane guy. not a train guy. For all the troubles and delays getting Dreamliners on AC property, the airline got 7 450 seat 777-300ERS for cost plus a free upgrade from 788 model to 789. I hope Siemens is compensating Calgary Transit in a similar fashion.

Are these new cars going to run on the Blue Line as well? I've only seen one on the Red Line, and none on the blue so far...

I believe the intention is to run the LRV9 trains on the red line as only the red line has all stations capable of handling four car trains. That said as the redline gets more LRV9, the series 8 should transition over to Blue line and the U2s should be pulled off the blue line and exit the fleet.

Speaking of the new cars.. I take the red line almost every day, since September, and still haven't got to ride it yet.

Is it due to platform length or traction power?

Platform length on the NE section. Although I think 4 train U2 consist would have tough time fully loaded westbound on WLRT.

Umm, you sure? "Platform extension work is complete at all 45 stations to accommodate the longer four-car trains." (https://www.calgarytransit.com/news/training-begins-four-car-ctrains)

The answer is simple - the people in the NE don't get the nice trains.

I mistook the recent station renovations at Rundle and Marlborough as being related to four car extension. However on closer reading it looks like the renovations were for other reasons.

Indeed! https://www.calgarytransit.com/StationRenovations

Upgrades to the stations will include:
  • Modifications to the station layout to improve the flow of pedestrian traffic.
  • Upgrades to building finishes to provide a cleaner, more comfortable station, such as new floor tiles, benches and wall panels.
  • Improved lighting and better use of natural light.
  • Installation of more CCTV cameras to improve safety and security.
  • Updated communication systems and new signs.
  • Upgrades to heating and ventilation systems.

Also are there any plans to show a dynamic station map on the screwns, is that already implemented? From the videos I've seen its just a click and static images and that seems like a huge waste.
I agree they look rinky-dink but the way they are now offers more flexibility and I've heard longer trains might not fit in maintenance facilities. Also, the philosophy is increasingly (wrongly, IMO) trending to making these systems more to the streetcar side of the spectrum than the heavy rail metro side, so the image of a heavy metro train would clash with that.
