Sheesh, what a depressing picture!! Made all the moreso by that little cluster of anemic lanterns at one end.
Surely with a bit of imagination and investment, thye could do something to brighten this up. It has all the charm of Moscow or Novosibirsk.

Solutions:

1. No fucking dumpsters

2. A nice glass canopy

3. Animated art using lights along the empty wall and / or managed vines growing on the empty wall.

4. Bricks / granite (or at least stamped concrete) instead of depressing gray slabs on the bottom.

5. A more bold / noticeable lighting scheme above.

6. Again, remove the fucking dumpsters.

I wish these planners in Vancouver could just join me here for a day or two in Japan, I could take them for endless walks down successful bustling covered arcades, active narrow pedestrian roadways, lively back alleys, etc.. One thing you will notice that they all have in common is morel lights, signs, businesses (rarely long walls of nothing), decent masonry, AND NO FUCKING DUMPSTERS! Trash is kept within businesses often until closing time when pickup arrives.

Well the lanterns themselves look much better now that they are clustered together but the alley itself is a gutter... They should go for broke and fill that alley with those lanterns.

The lanterns are still coming, that dumpster is temporary. Wait until it's finished before being dissappointed.

I agree with all that, but without a reason to go to the alley it'll all be wasted on nothing. There needs to be restaurants/cafes/whatever facing the alley.

If only they could punch through the old concrete building and put in ground level commercial it would make a huge difference. Put in a Starbucks, a sushi place, a juice bar, and a take out place and you'll have pedestrian traffic all day.

Nevermind the dumpsters - what on earth is that Super Save toilet?!? Is that the "No Frills" open-air version? And on wheels, so you can end up someplace other than where you started?! Inquiring minds need to know...

Edit: Huh, I believe that's an "Elevator Unit", designed to be able to be transported in a construction elevator. New thing learned for today.

Here's a pic I took a few minutes ago. I didn't alter the image in any way because I wanted to try to show the difference in light level between the edge lighting on the condo tower and the edge lighting on the office tower. It's been like this every night for at least a week now so I presume this is the final look. When seen in person the condo tower has a ghostly presence in the sky, unlike the edge lighting on the office tower, which is bright white and very prominent. I saw it from the Cambie Bridge a few nights ago and the condo tower lighting does not stand out very much from a distance.

There's scaffolding up in the alley now - maybe to install the green wall on the William Farrell Building?
Could also be the reason the ;anterns were taken down.
