That's very sad.

Let's hope he will fully recover.

I don't think I saw it posted here yet - I just read on LA Downtown News that the Arts District Park is set to open this weekend. It's tough to give a verdict without being there in person but it looks promising to me aside from the sadly prison-like fencing. Still, I imagine that plenty of people will want to stop in after hitting Urth Caffe

Even the entry gates look like they belong in prison yards. It's poor execution with the fencing because the fencing is needed in this part of town.

That said, I do like the amount of greenspace in this park.

That's what the FAB Park should look like -- simple, non-fussy.

True, but an easy fix once the area has more vibrant pedestrian activity. Just tear it down.

My greatest hope is one day we decide we can remove the fences on downtown parks.

Meh, even Manhattan has fencing on many of its urban parks. It just has to be done tastefully. Low brick/stone wall with planters or wrought-iron fencing is a common way to protect the park at night while avoiding the monolithic prison-yard type fencing.

Maybe if they even grew ivy over the fence as it is it might look good.

LOL @ "43,000 people will be displaced"

Quote:
" As part of its agreement with the city, the developer promised to set aside 5% of the 1,444 housing units for low-income housing, provide $15 million for an affordable housing fund and give an additional $3 million to community organizations for job training, youth programs and violence prevention efforts.

Some residents said the concessions are not enough.

Lamar Banks said his grandmother was just priced out of the neighborhood, and he's concerned it will happen to other low-income residents.

“We’re scrambling right now trying to find her a place,” he said. “She's 65 years old and shouldn't be working, but all she’s thinking about is how she’s going to pay the rent for the new spot. I'm looking at all these families, and they are going to be going through the same thing we are going through.”"
This is the thing that bothers me about these kinds of situations. People will complain that their area is neglected and sees no new development/attention. Then once the strip malls/surface parking lots gets removed for decent development/parks/etc., residents are shocked to learn that an area improving results in higher rents. It's as if residents can't realize there's a relationship between the price of rent and the quality of an area.

Is there anyway to convince these kinds of people that fighting to keep a surface parking is worse in the long term?

BTW I wouldn't be surprised if this was the same crowd who protested the Oceanwide project.

People protested Oceanwide? Are you thinking of the people in the news video protesting at the Circa groundbreaking last year?

Yeah, you're right on that detail.

I don't get the displacement thing. Older neighborhoods are all covered under rent stabilization. Rent cannot go up more than 3% yearly, period. And, a tenant can be evicted only for a specified set of causes. IOW, a landlord can't evict just because he wants tenants willing to pay more.

You sure about that? I know people in south la whose rent was raised much more than that. They live in single family homes if that matters. Most in that neighborhood probably do as well.

I want the Reef project to get built as much as anyone here (though the design really could use work imo), but I do think this is one of the few cases where there is a point to what the NIMBYs are saying. This area isn't some longtime wealthy area that is fighting against condos that make sense there, it is a historically cruddy neighborhood that could have some serious negative effects if condos go up there. I would say the good outweighs the bad by far, but I am not on of the people who are affected in the slightest by this project, so it is unfair for me to speak for them.

This project will displace people, 48,000 is 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵, but over the next 10 years as this area booms, 48,000 is an understatement. Will that boom be for the better? Absolutely, but these people are being screwed over by the cycle of poverty and gentrification, and Reef will hurt them. Opposing it isn't the answer, because it will help the city in the end, but something beyond affordable housing needs to be done to try to address this problem. Right now this is happening to the poor, but soon enough it will happen to the middle class, and then even the rich. LA can't go the way of NYC or even worse San Francisco.

The goal is to definitely look and do everything that is done in Manhattan.

The people who were protesting the Crica groundbreaking is the Los Angeles Community Action network (LACAN). They are a skid row based organization that is mostly concerned with black people in skid row.

The people protesting the Reef is a new set of people that is mostly hispanic and made up of people who live south of the 10.

Thanks for the clarification. Since the two projects are in same area, I'd imagine they were the same groups.

Downtown seems to be getting soo many proposals these days that everybody totally bypassed Blackcats post. Time travel back 10 years and his post would have been the talk of this page for at least a month with endless speculations. A sign of the times perhaps?

"Another tower proposal ? eh no big deal, lets talk about a gated park and nimbys instead"

In regards to the tower. The street facing side is ok.... But am I the only one that finds it odd that the podium is nearly the same size as the tower itself?
