They're testing the edge lighting again tonight on the condo tower, this time at a very low brightness. All the light panels seem to be on, as far as I can see from my vantage point.
Yes, all I see in that alley is fail, fail, fail. Even the gutter in the centre will have a build up of gunk in it and you'll have to step over it. I wonder if the original idea was that Telus was going to still have control of the William Farrel building and be able to do something with it's wall. As it looks now, that wall doesn't look like it's going to change. Even the glaring security lighting will probably remain.

Agreed, anyone know if they will be reinstalling the art lanterns?
key word there is "alley" lighting. it looks like an alley, not a place you hang out unless you are homeless and/or drug addict. even they wouldn't like it, too much lighting. but then not enough for actual usage. unless they do something drastic, this will be a flop.
so let's DO something drastic and break the shallow boundaries !!!!

well the City didn't really do that, that was the BIA. i do think that will be a flop as well, but time will tell. at least they have those LED lamp posts down the entire length of that ally.
At least there are movements towards more vibrant urban spaces in alleyways from the private sector. I think that there are great alleys for further revitalization. Blood Alley being an example of where the city is actually putting in the resources to create an intriguing urban space, and I look forward to seeing how it goes. If successful we may see a lot more historic alleys cleaned up and activated. These things don't happen over night.

My main thing that needs to be addressed in alleys is the stench of them being used as toilets, dumpsters can always be relocated. Until we have more public washroom facilities it's not worth the investment. The city has to put the horse before the cart for alley revitalization to work.

I think that you have that backwards. A well lit alley with bars/restaurants open will help to prevent people from using them as toilets, I can't really see public washrooms doing the same.

What about during the off hours? Alot of homeless aren't very discerning about where they pee, on the main streets too. I think we just need to start a routine hosing down of all buildings downtown and the DTES... I still think theres other things the money should be spent on first, leave it to the building owners to open up the back of the buildings to the alleys. I agree they need to be properly lit aswell.

Yeah, but you need restaurants/cafes opening onto the alley. You need a reason for people to be there apart from pink basketball courts for photo ops.
