They kept saying that if there was no drive through, Starbucks would not sign on and the project would be dead.

There was some discussion and ultimate reconfiguration of the Spring Street retail frontage for fire/equipment access reasons, but there was no mention of any retail tenants other than Starbucks.
Expansion of the Bike Share Program likely

Williams Street is just an alley at that point which might make that difficult. At a minimum at least the direction is reversed from the previous Starbucks. Traffic was backing up onto Spring almost every morning.

Are you referring to the Northside Medical Office Building in Midtown?

This issue is overblown IMO. I honestly think some people will never be happy unless they have a completely pedestrian environment with no cars allowed.

honestly i feel a one way street is easier to cross as a pedestrian than a two way street. maybe thats just me.. but when you know the cars are only coming from one direction there are less decisions to make.. West Peachtree is fine.. i dont think it needs to be two way. Spring I could see working as two way. i dunno

I think if West Peachtree were 2 lanes wide keeping it as a 2-way street would be fine - but the fact that it's a 4 lane, one-way road (even 4+ lanes in some areas) is what prevents it from being a better retail/restaurant environment.

Keeping it as a de-facto highway on-ramp of sorts is what held back a lot of the retail/restaurant growth. In order for Peachtree Street to succeed we need more than one "signature" street to work for other tiers of retail/restaurant growth as well.

Bravo! Really like that this helps knit together midtown north/south as well as east/west, as a lot of the retail appears to be on 7th st.

If the issue is overblown in Atlanta, then for *&#*$ sake, what is it in New York, Chicago, London, Paris, etc? I mean as a city, we are way behind. We just want a good experience for pedestrians. Is that really too much to ask for? Don't be the woman in this photo:

This is very true, one street is not going to make a city.

They need to expand across all of the streets in Midtown down to Downtown and make it more pedestrian friendly the whole way for true growth.

That space would be perfect for a 24-hour convenience store type thing...like the QT at Viewpoint. Anything like that to cater to students.

I truly don't believe that we are a one-street city...we have other nice pedestrian streets. But I totally agree that the one-way streets through Midtown are set up to funnel traffic from downtown to Midtown and beyond - and they become like highways at times. I know when I lived just south of downtown I used them constantly instead of the Connector and they were normally much faster. Piedmont, Juniper, West Peachtree, and Spring could all use improvements in Midtown, and they aren't much better through a lot of downtown either. They are set up the same way there - as quick ways to get out.

I for the most part agree with you. Piedmont and Juniper streets in Midtown are one way streets and their pedestrian experience is quite nice. For example, they are just as pleasant as 14th Street - a two way street. And certainly more pleasant for pedestrians than the two-way streets of North Avenue and Northside Drive.

West Peachtree - a one way street - has become much more pedestrian-friendly in the last decade or so particularly south of 10th Street.

Turning one way streets to two-way streets alone does not necessarily promote pedestrian-friendliness. Several smallish one-way streets (6th St., 7th St, 8th St) - which were already pedestrian friendly - have been made two-way streets and making them two-way did not necessarily improve their pedestrian experience. They are just as pedestrian friendly as before.

My point is only converting a street from one-way to two-way solely does not necessarily make it more pedestrian-friendly.

Nonetheless, I do prefer two-way streets throughout the area - as it may provide better experiences for broader audience if done right.

I do the same thing. I constantly use those one-way streets to by-pass the Downtown Connector...but I also used two-way streets (Northside Drive and even Monroe Drive) to avoid Downtown Connector.

I hate slow or jammed freeway traffic which generally means I may only take the Downtown Connector between 9pm and 6am.
