Good news on the North broad an chestnut street projects. Only part I didn't like is the article said it may be up to 2 years before construction starts on the PHA property. I'm glad it's going to be taller than AQ Rittenhouse, but more than 20 floors would've been great.

Right. Because after all these years, beggars can be choosers.

I actually quite like it. And it's not because I'm settling.

Because it makes sense given the enormous amount of open space around it. Until it all (or mostly) fills in, we can't really be complaining about height or lack thereof at that location.

Lincoln Square NW corner Broad+ Washington. Spring 17 Groundbreaking mentioned. Not crazy about the design/materials but anything is an improvement to whats there now.

3rd and Brown - the design problem with the Lincoln at Broad and Washington is not its height. But it's poor design. Compare that to the Darien at 21st and Spring Garden off the Parkway with the new Whole foods. Yes, the Lincoln will attract beggars and nothing else. agreed!

It still has to go through CDR. Maybe we'll see some improvement yet (even if not earth-skaking).

Jewelers Row buildings get initial OK for historic designation

Two quick takeaways:

1) It's TOO LATE for these buildings. But not too late for the other buildings that line the Row. Instead of using valuable resources to preserve these buildings, accept defeat and work to protect the other buildings. Have these asshats learned nothing?

2) Pushing to preserve these buildings that have already been approved for demolition will achieve nothing except push Toll to demolish them as quickly as possible. Instead, the city should stop this charade and work with Toll on the next best thing: to preserve the facades AND ensure that the storefronts are rented to jewlers.*

*Tangent: ever notice how all new construction retail store fronts are only affordable for corporate chains and star chefs? Ensuring these storefronts are rented to jewlers is just as important than maintaining the facades. Otherwise, I guarantee we'll end up with a bank, a drugstore, or some "fast casual" chain restaurant - which will be far more destructive to Jewler's Row character than losing these buildings.

I have to agree that "beggars can't be choosers." The tower is not my style, but it's not unbearable (or inappropriately massed, like Blatstein's folly). My biggest beef is the low-rise addition to the shed. It's like tacking an MAB paint store onto the Reading Terminal. I think that's where CDR will accomplish something.

Here is the actual design of the addition to the shed. I don't think it's that bad.

^^I somehow missed that. I think that's fine. I recall that prior renderings were much more bland, like the one a few posts up the page.

That one rendering at 1000 S. Broad St. does look better but I wish they would do something that more complements the train shed. A glass cube or something that at least alludes to the train shed's exterior or roof line? I like the project otherwise. It seems like there is only garage entrance so I can't imagine there will be too big of a tenant. Don't grocery stores want independent parking lots like the new dalian whole foods? Speaking of that project, Inga was very critical of its monolith barreness. I haven't been there myself yet, but I tend to agree from the photos.

How on earth did a developer amass all the properties at the corner of 36th and Lancaster to develop that parcel?

Also Penn in consistently ranked 4th in the Ivys behind the big 3 for whatever dumbo thought otherwise. The lowest one are always Darthmoth, Cornell, and Brown duh.

Any way we can get the two threads above into the "Philadelphia Projects and Construction" Forum?

Were you referring to the WSJ/Times Higher Ed. rankings 2017 ? Here is the link https://www.timeshighereducation.com/ran...l_display_rank/sort_order/asc/cols/stats

I think the Lancaster Mews property has been a single amalgamation for some time now. After being told to go back to the drawing board -- twice -- the owners finally figured out the best way to update the property is to build on the service alley/parking lot in the back while reno'ing the existing Mews complex (which is itself an entire rowhome block reno'ed into an apartment complex dating to maybe the 90s).

It's also a Top 10 school in any academic ranking you could care to name. Usually 9th overall, after the Big 3 Ivies, Stanford, and a few elite liberal arts schools.

P.S. It's Dartmouth. Like dart + mouth. Mouth of the Dart? Is there a Dart river in New Hampshire?

Yes I know that, I was just a fast typing era. Dartmouth usually pronounced Dart-myth.

Just like our neighborhood is Fairmount, not the common Fairmont you see many other cities.

You spelled it "Darth Moth". Which is actually kind of amusing.

You mean the Dalian?

So if you think that's a good design we can agree to disagree.
