This may not be the correct forum, but I thought some of you might find this interesting.

The sidewalks on both sides of Peachtree Street immediately south of the 5th Street intersection are now closed. Trace Midtown still has their side blocked off to park their jug lift. Now the Google Fiber contractors have blocked off the other side. There is literally no way for pedestrians to get from 4th Street to 5th Street without walking out in the street on Peachtree.

I talked to both the Google Fiber contractor and the assistant superintendent at the Trace Midtown site. The fiber contractor said he has permits from the city to close the sidewalk even though it is already closed on the other side. This does not surprise me. He said it will be closed probably until Friday. There didn't seem to be any plan to reroute pedestrians other than just yelling at them at the last minute and telling them they can't go through there. Some are just cutting across the church's lawn and using the church's stairsteps a little way down 5th St.

The assistant superintendent from the Trace Midtown (JLB Partners) site was very unpleasant and dismissive. He basically laughed at me and said its a construction site and I live in the city so I need to deal with it. When I said that other projects manage to not close the sidewalk. He told me to get an engineering degree and then get back with him. The conversation ended by him telling me to "eat a d*ck".

Either he was just having a bad day or that's some serious insight into how they view their responsibility (or lack thereof) to the community where they build their projects.

(And BTW, I do agree with the JLB guy to a certain extent with respect to tolerance for city living.)

I would have told him to kiss my country @$$ and then called/emailed the CEO of JLB.

He could have politely told you a day they expected to open up the sidewalk. Some people....

It's time for the citizens of Atlanta to demand changes in regards to sidewalks during construction...make scaffolding a requirement. There's absolutely no reason BOTH sides of a sidewalk should be closed on the busiest street in Atlanta. Absolutely insane.

I agree 100% that sidewalks are often closed for too long, but everyone you talked to are well within their rights to do it if they have permission. It's the city's responsibility to not allow it. You're bothering the wrong people. Talk to the city.

They did the same last week on the same block. It's BS. Here's what to do...contact Salley Flocks at PEDS and also email Councilman Kwanza Hall. If you're really fired up...take a picture and send an email to Maria Saporta particularly in regards to how they spoke to you.

As usual, great photos!

I hadn't noticed that they have started installing glass at Amli. But I don't see a crane installation at Ascent. That's a piling rig used for drilling the deep foundation of the building.

The square on glen iris looks really well done, Atlantic House parking garage stret level is turning out pretty great, and AMLI Arts Center just seems like it's going to turn out a really great project with that slight bend.

Redevelopment of the Masquerade. I cannot find the more recent photos, but essentially a restaurant and two (I believe?) buildings for a new apartment complex adjacent O4W Park and the BeltLine.

It is sad (to me) that the Equitable Building will no longer read "EQUITABLE" on the skyline after all these years, but good to see more business moving downtown. They are flowing in at a steady rate now.

Is this going to be an actual sobi rack, or will it be like the spot at 12th and Piedmont? We like riding from Woodruff Park down to Piedmont Park (via Freedom Path & Beltline) and leaving the bikes at the 12th St dropoff, but one at 13th would be even more convenient. It would be really useful to put one near the 14th St tower cluster, but all in due time.

Assuming the transit referendum passes next month, we should see a lot more bikes and places to park them.

Cause it makes a very deep, pure sense to my brain...

Still, retail is something to keep our favorite urban streets alive until now. That's why most on here and elsewhere hate exurban, suburban malls surrounded by surface parking lots so much. They would ruin your downtown streets in their lazy fashion if they could (but they can't). It's better to have families, their kids and single people to stroll their streets and enjoy it. It seems socially healthy.

Street retail is surely not the best possible thing, still acceptable till we get in some more cooperative economy.
Not sure we'll see that luckier in our lifetimes, though. I guess people who'll follow us will be luckier than we are, as I'm sure we are luckier than those who came before us.

Ant131531 - awesome update, thanks. I don't know what the consensus here, but Atlantic House looks shockingly good IMO. The detailing on the balconies, painting the concrete vertical lines and materials used in the parking garage are excellent....upscale.
