I assume you are talking about advanced imaging technology (aka "telephone booth machines"). In Canada, the AIT machines are always used as secondary search technology to the walk through metal detector (WTMD). There will be one phone booth at D and a second booth at E. Only in USA and select European countries have AIT as the primary method to screen passengers.

Depending on what they do with the 763s being based at YVR next summer... Yes certainly possible.

There needs to be Calgary at the front of the name fir recognition purposes.

Without going to the Internet, name these airports
- Capital international airport.
- OR Tambo International Airport
- Orchard Field
- Gardermoen Airport
- Mid Continent Airport
- McCoy Airport
- Bob Hope Airport
- John Wayne Airport
- Daugherty Field

YYC Calgary International Airport is the least controversial name the airport authority could go with.

Naming after a politician would generate a lot more chin wagging.
- Calgary Ralph Klein International
- Peter Lougheed Calgary International
- Stephen Harper International
- Southern International ( after the ATCO founder)

Or... crazy talk, I know.... they could have just kept calling it Calgary International Airport. And installed some water fountains.

Watched the Global newscast that was live from the airport. Looks like they've installed some great public art. For those who have done the trials I'm curious if there are many water features in the new terminal (ponds, fountains, waterfalls etc...)? I find the presence of water always adds to these large indoor spaces and two of my current favorites areas of YYC are the departures level waterfall by the food court and the (current) international arrivals area water wall.

PS - the new YYC Link shuttle service also looks really cool.

No it's not. That would be to leave it Calgary International Airport instead of needlessly adding redundancy.

ORD/MCO/MCI/LGB/OSL whatever else on that list are no longer called that so I don't get using them as examples? John Wayne is still called John Wayne Airport but has no aspirations to be an int'l hub so it doesn't much matter. What about...

Chicago O'Hare Int'l
Toronto Pearson Int'l
Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta Int'l

They all seem to get on fine.

Calgary McCall Int'l would therefore be just fine.

I'm a big believer that airports should simply be named after the cities they serve.

Naming an airport after a person may be feasible and understandable for a handful of major, well-established hub airports who've carried a person's name for a long time. And unique naming becomes a necessity in cities with more than one commercial airport. Everybody will understand you perfectly if you say you're "flying from JFK to O'Hare" or "LaGuardia to Dulles".

But nobody from outside of Canada would ever understand which city you're going to if you were to say "I'm flying into Pearson". And nobody even inside Canada would ever understand "I'm flying into Richardson".

Sure, naming an airport after a prominent politician, businessperson, or other local resident is a nice gesture when it first happens ... but it's largely meaningless to most people who use the building, and is rendered totally meaningless as time passes. Only a handful of history and/or aviation buffs would be able to tell you who any of Richardson, LaGuardia, Lambert, Hopkins, Dulles or Hobby were. Sadly, for most, they're just meaningless words attached to airports. (And most airports that have been renamed after a person have subsequently had to re-re-name themselves to add the city name back into their official name for clarity.)

Instead, methinks it's best to just keep it simple. Name the airport after the city. Fill it up with statues or plaques or photo galleries of all of those famous locals from the city's history, if you want. (One of my favourite spots at YYC is that hidden little gallery at the end of the Delta Hotel +15 walkway -- with the history display and airport dioramas.) But please just keep our airport named for our city.

The airport should market a city. It should clearly identify the city. The name is important. So just call ours "Calgary". Or, like a lot of international carriers do on their schedules and route maps, call us "Calgary/Banff". That'd be fine too.

But please don't call us McCall. Or Lougheed. Or Harper. Or Nenshi. (Or Bronconnier, Kenney, Joe Clark, Ross Alger, Guy Weadick, Stu Hart, Ted Cruz or Deborah Drever.) Just "Calgary", thanks.

(And, no, I really don't get the "YYC Calgary" thing either. It does seem redundant. But Garth Atkinson did a nice job of explaining their reasoning on Global News last night. His point was that even though the official name has always been "Calgary International", the entire city has really adopted "YYC" as the name -- without the airport authority ever pushing it. His point was that, since that "YYC" brand has developed organically and is now in common use, they just wanted to put it in the official name.)

Kinda confirms the points about using people names for airports leading to confusion, eh?

Yes, Bob Hope Airport = Burbank (BUR), not PSP. Burbank's official name remains "Bob Hope Airport". But that was understandably confusing. So, although it's officially still named "Bob Hope Airport", the airport has rebranded itself as "Hollywood / Burbank Airport" so that people actually had a clue where it was.

Palm Springs International = Palm Springs. No fancy naming there. But they do have the "Sonny Bono Concourse" (really) inside the airport.

Calgary McCall International makes the most sense to me too. It's either just 'Calgary International Airport', or if an important name is with it, then 'Calgary McCall International' How can this be so difficult? lol.

Like the ones you mentioned, or
Washington Dulles
London Heathrow
Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta
etc....

Or they could go with Calgary International Airport... Don't know why on earth they need the YYC in front. Nobody ever, ever, ever is going to say the whole title.

Even then I feel like JFK and LaGuardia are on a different level of public recognition than O'Hare and Dulles. LIke if you took a random poll of 100 North Americans who have flown at least a couple times, and asked if they were able to identify what city JFK, LGA, Dulles, and O'Hare are in... would Dulles or O'Hare do better than like 2/10?

Would Calgary airport own any rights to "YYC" because of the name change? it is the IATA code, but would they have any power over a business using "YYC Taxi" as its name for instance?

Is the airport trying to facilitate the use of 'YYC' in the vernacular like LAX?

Kind of like how almost all other western cities have done so. I'm not sure if it's a hipster or millennial affectation.

They should name areas inside the airport, then.

McCall Concourse.
Harper Security Screening.
Lougheed Baggage Claim.
Nenshi Duty Free.
Deborah Drever Arcade.
And so on...
