David Staples: Get used to praise, not putdowns, about our suddenly hip city

DAVID STAPLES, EDMONTON JOURNAL

Edmonton is suddenly getting praised as a hip city, a star city, a city on the move.

You OK with the piling on of praise, modest Edmontonians? Brace yourselves.

After decades of outsiders mocking, belittling and blasting away at Edmonton, publications from New York to Calgary are praising the city, its restaurants, its physical beauty and its supposed cool.

Even Edmonton pizza is getting a push.

In the Readers Choice Awards of Conde Nast Traveller, Edmonton’s pizza was voted the eighth best in the entire world, ahead of the pizza in Milan, Florence and Palermo, Italy.

Then there’s CBC Calgary’s Richard White, who in his comparison of Edmonton and Calgary’s architecture noted that Edmonton used to be Deadmonton but now the tides have turned: “Edmonton’s City Centre is once again thriving with 35 active development projects worth over $5 billion. The opening of the iconic Rogers Place and the creation of the new Ice District with its new hotels, condos, office buildings and casino has rocketed Edmonton to ‘star city’ status … What is perhaps even more shocking is Edmonton will soon have a taller building than Calgary *gasp*.”

http://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-ne...not-putdowns-about-our-suddenly-hip-city

This is great advertising for our city and whoever cant see it oh well.

Embrace this bitches. Who cares how it was delivered.

The sound of a road paving machine vibrates the ground behind Rogers Place.

It's a constant noise that Lacey Jane Wilburn and Layla Folkmann have become used to.

"It's been sort of a combat with the construction noise," said Folkmann, who was busy painting one of five larger-than-life portraits just outside the community rink on Monday.

The artists' latest venture consists of five portraits that extend up the surface of 10-metre tall concrete slabs at 105th Avenue and 102nd Street.

The work is both a tribute to, and a reflection of, the people who work and use the nearby Boyle Street Community Services centre.

Their subjects are people who the artists call the "daily faces" of the community, even if their voices are not always heard. In this art project, called "Pillars of the Community," they take centre-stage.

"We wanted to take their face and put them back and remind people that this is the community, this is where culture comes from," said Wilburn.

"You can't put culture down, it already exists and it's important to be aware of these communities and to work with them."

It's not a hard website to navigate. Skyscrapercity has the gold standard for international participation amongst city websites on the internet. We should boost Edmonton's profile over there.

^ no kidding

If you have to stand on a soap box to tell everyone how "hip" and "cool" you are, chances are you are neither

That article was cringeworthy to say the least. But not surprising given that David Staples is most definitely a consummate shill for certain areas of the city, yet lacks any sort of awareness about others.

To me it is called pride, something Edmontonians are growing more and more of their city.

It is not front page news, it is good for what it is.

Yeah given that Edmontonians are currently losing their shit over the opening of the last leg of a ring road like it's the best thing to happen to them in decades, I think it's ok to be reminded that we do have some actually amazing things going on in our city that we should be legitimately excited about.

The completed Henday will have a lot larger effect on the day to day life of more Edmontonians than any of the buildings, lightposts, arenas or any of the other inconsequential shit that the people on this forum lose their shit over on a regular basis.

Your statement is a perfect encapsulation of how dramatically out of touch many of the posters on this forum are with the rank & file residents of their own city.

I would argue that those who think commute times are the most important considerations in their lives are the ones who are out of touch, probably with themselves more than anything else. That makes me legitimately sad.

It's not that commute times are the most important considerations, it's that they're literally the least productive part of anyone's day. The half hour that isn't spent in the car can be spent doing anything more productive now. You seeing it as just about the commute times shows more about your own mindset than those who are celebrating the new road. Not everyone is going to take advantage of the extra time, and certainly not in the same way even if they do, but just having that freedom to allocate your time how you choose is something to be celebrated.

On another subject, a while back I hinted at a big TOD project in the pipeline; here's a bit more info on that:

That's a fair statement, but that's certainly not how any of the hubub around it is being framed.

In any event, what does it say about us when we're celebrating a new road (seemingly endlessly...I like you, Sonic 102.9, but seriously it's time to find something else to talk about) while deriding stories and praises about other great things in our city? Things that - according to yourself - we should suddenly find so much more time to explore and enjoy?

Wow, I never thought I'd see this day but I totally agree with noodle, WTF?

Commute times are very important and have no bearing on how I feel about other projects in the city. My new commute now takes half the time, this means I get 45 minutes a day, 225 minutes a week, 11,025 minutes a year (184 hours) to do things that matter to me like spending time with my kids that otherwise would be spent stuck in traffic. Tell me this is not a reason to be excited about the new Henday?

It makes me sad that you think that this road is only about driving when it is about so much more.

Like I said, people may have different reasons as to WHY the Henday's reduction of commute times are good for them, but the common thread is that the net reduction is a good thing. So that's what people are talking about, the common denominator.

If you've got more issues with Sonic's coverage of the Henday than Staples' biases & blindspots in conjunction with his inveterate shilling I attribute that to your own personal biases lining up with one & not the other, aka personal preference. Fair enough. But to decry others for their preferences not being shared by yourself just reinforces my initial point about the ivory tower that is SSP & how out of touch many of the posters are with the rank & file.

(I listen to Radio 2 or Spotify myself, I find announcers annoying in any context.)
